Beaumont honors Lamar baseball coach

Jim Gilligan's way has proven to be a reliable formula for Lamar University baseball through 33 seasons and 1,167 victories.

So, it was appropriate Tuesday when Beaumont City Council voted unanimously to rename a section of East Florida Avenue to Jim Gilligan Way in honor of the head coach, who ranks sixth among the NCAA's active coaches in career victories with 1,177 (his first 10 came in one season at Western New Mexico).

Jim Gilligan Way will extend from Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and past Vincent-Beck Stadium to University Drive.

I am happy for Jim and think that this is a simple way for the city to show their appreciation for the many years of service that he has given to the city and to Lamar.

Like baseball25 I think it it about time for Gilligan to step aside, but I thank and respect him for his many years of service and success at this university.  This is a simple and deserved tribute to an important member of the Lamar family.
