Dogs' Take Thrilling Game at the Reservation

Brandon Corley-SETXsports Writer

The Micah Mosley show has returned for Nederland. Still favoring an unhealed ankle injury that incurred in Vidor, Mosley, with a lot of help from dominating lineman, marched up and down the field in front of 13,000 at the 83rd meeting between the Nederland Bulldogs and the PN-G Indians. Mosley ended the night with an outstanding 275 yards on 42 carries and 3 touchdowns.

The doubt that existed prior to the game about several factors including Mosley's ankle and Nederland's defense, should have been completely erased after a nice start by the Bulldogs including 16 unanswered points to open the game. PN-G finally got their act going in the second quarter after a sluggish and dazed opening period. PN-G quickly racked up 3 touchdowns before the half, taking the lead from Nederland 21-16. PN-G came out and scored again early in the third, but this time, Nederland held them to a field goal, increasing their lead 24-16. Nederland responded well and continued to pound it out on the ground with Mosley. Nederland tied it up at 24 after a two point conversion was successful. Although 13,000 people knew who was getting the ball for Nederland, PN-G could not stop the machine consisting of Nederland's lineman and Micah Mosley. At this point in the game, it was obvious that this Mid-County Madness would be no different than many others, it would go down to the wire.

Nederland successfully came out in the fourth quarter and stopped PN-G's offense, allowing Mosley a chance to grace the field again and pick up more yards and another touchdown. Nederland led 31-14 with a few minutes remaining, but PN-G returned the kickoff all the way into Bulldog territory near the 40 yard line, with a hopeful drive ahead. The Bulldog defense continued to remain strong and provided a huge interception by Jordan Landry to perhaps seal the game for PN-G. PN-G did get the ball back after Nederland's failed trickery attempt, but poor play calling with no timeouts landed PN-G with its second district loss and a deteriorating playoff picture. Nederland still struggles with the passing game, but will most likely not be a concern until playoffs, should Nederland reach them. The key for Nederland will obviously be Mosley but in addition to that, it will be their defense. A huge improvement since the Central game enabled Nederland to walk away with a win here. PN-G still struggles offensively, but showed some potential in Tatum, a sophomore.

This game is unlike any other game. The pride, tradition, and bragging rights define this game and place it at the top of the list for biggest rivalries. Nederland and PN-G have now battled it out 83 times in the game aptly referred to as Mid-County Madness.
