Guest Nederland Bandit Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 The Pride of being District Champion With the advent in 90 of the multiple teams going to the playoffs did it take away the ergency and pride of having the sole right to claim you were district champs. It seems now many teams and coaches are content with just making the playoffs in the second two spots.
Guest ECBucFan Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 I agree, and have said so before on this general topic. With more and more teams "earning" a playoff berth, its gotten cheap, and about to be cheaper. Now, losers get in, and soon ALL teams will be in the playoffs, thats what the UIL wants. CHEAP.
tvc184 Posted October 16, 2006 Report Posted October 16, 2006 The Pride of being District Champion With the advent in 90 of the multiple teams going to the playoffs did it take away the ergency and pride of having the sole right to claim you were district champs. It seems now many teams and coaches are content with just making the playoffs in the second two spots. There is no longer the urgency but I don't think any coach plays for a playoff spot only. Which fans or which coaches would take third place in a district if they can be the district champion? With that being said, I would bet that the third place schools certainly don't go into the playoffs feeling cheap. Then there is the excitement of just going for a playoff spot late in the season. Right now Lumberton is making an effort for their first ever playoff spot. LC-M is trying to make it for the first time in several years. I wonder if their fans feel cheap. If we did not have multiple playoff teams, District 22-4A would basically be over with more than half the district games to go. The only game that would be significant would be the Dayton vs Central game to see which one team went to the playoffs. That might be appealing to some people but I would think an overwhelming majority of fans would keep the current system. Would the Dayton and Central fans want to make it a winner take all game with the loser not going to the playoffs? I would bet not.
Guest Indian Chief Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I may be the only one here but i like the idea of 3 teams going to the postseason. I think like TVC i guess.
Guest ECBucFan Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I say, if you get in with a losing district record (and that does happen), it is cheap. It about to get cheaper, with eventually everyone getting in. UIL=cheap.
tvc184 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 UIL likes $$ The idea of having one site for 5A championship games is prima facie evidence that the UIL is about money. Their rationale for doing so is easily shown to be wrong. It comes down to money.
tvc184 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I say' date=' if you get in with a losing district record (and that does happen), it is cheap. It about to get cheaper, with eventually everyone getting in. UIL=cheap.[/quote'] A losing team may get in but more likely if it is less than three teams, really good teams will be left out. Do you punish good teams for the sake of a few that get lucky? I think once you get past three teams, especially in 6 team districts, you start putting in teams that are better left out. I think most of the time, they will be eliminated in the first playoff game and almost certainly by the second so what is the difference anyway. So you give a few kids a shot at a playoff game that they would not receive otherwise. I won't lose any sleep over it.
Zoneblock Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 It should have stayed where the 1st and 2nd place teams go. This 3rd and now 4th place team is bullcrap!! The play-offs are getting watered down.
Tiger90 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 So the 3A district is watering down the playoffs by having 3 teams go? Look at the teams in that district. In other areas of the state several of these teams would be district champs. I would think you need 3 teams to go in most lower classification districts especially with the wide gaps in enrollment. You can't expect a small 3A school, say 420 kids, to be as competetive with a 3A school that is at the 900 mark on a consistent basis. By eliminating the 3rd playoff spot what are we actually accomplishing? If those 3rd place teams are "weak" then obviously after round 1 they are eliminated right? Ask Kirbyville how they felt getting eliminated early the past 2 seasons how it felt.....oh wait they made 3 rounds. That throws the "weak" argument out the window. Playoffs add excitement to the schools and helps the program plus the community is involved.
Guest BIG HOUSE Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Ask SILSBEE HOW IT FEELS TO WIN DIST. AND LOSE EVERY PLAYOFF GAME? SILSBEE SHOULDN'T TALK ABOUT K'VILLE!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ACTUALLY WIN WIN WIN PLAYOFF GAMES                     I SEE SILSBEE GOING NOWHERE IN A HURRY!!!!!!!!
Ty Cobb Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 It seems now many teams and coaches are content with just making the playoffs in the second two spots. This is very true. You have to realize that each teams ultimate goal is a State Championship, not a district championship. The key is to get to the "second season." Once your in the playoffs, anything can happen. I promise you there has never been, and never will be, a team that was mad because they won a state championship, but not the district championship.

Hotrodg Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Show me a team that doesnt care about winning a district championship.
Guest Indian Chief Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Good point. You have to remember though as more teams get added to the playoffs alot of Coaches are just happy to get in. Ask them.

Obviously you are not too astute to understand the post. Kirbyville was actually praised for being a perceived "weak or watered down" 3rd place team only to run over some champions from other districts. They actually deserved to make the playoffs therefore the 3 playoff spots was beneficial to them. I do not understand how that is a critique of the k'ville fb program. All that does is show how a 3 team playoff picture can be a good thing. At any rate losing to a powerhouse Palestine over the past 2 season is hardly anything to hang our head in shame about. It was a very good game last year. I see no need to bash Lumberton or bring their playoff record into the light because obviously you already have.
SilsbeeD Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Big House...that just shows how much of an easiar playoff schedual you guys had
GoDogs27 Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 well point is this: Since the 3-team playoff rule went into effect, how many times have we seen a team win state that did not win their District... its happened several times... District Championships have lost their meaning... I personally like the 3 team rule because under the old rule, it wasnt fair to teams from districts like 22-4A (20-4A) because the better teams dont always get in. You could have a team from podunk west texas somewhere get into the 4A playoffs and have a team from a very tough district not get in who deserves it more...
BOJObearfan Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 I'm lost. How many years has UIL let the top 3 district teams go to playoffs? And what is this about them letting even more?? :?:
KFDM COOP Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Eventually there will be 4 teams in 4A going to the playoffs.
WOS92 Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 Three teams is fine. Four teams is ridiculous. The truth is, they should do it by the number of teams in your district. If there are nine or 10 teams, four is not a problem. If there are four or five teams, even just three is ridiculous. Palestine was a powerhouse last year?
