Just glancing at the Houston Chronicle stats: they were 8 - 3 last year and lost in the first round to Clear Springs. Looks like they mix it up pretty well (if it's the same offense this year) between the run and pass. 2100 pass yds. & 1700 on the ground. QB is back as a junior. Their enrollment numbers look to be close to Daytons. Don't really know anything else about them.

Can't remember his name ,but one of the Houston Oilers kids  is playing  for Fort Bend and is a D-1 prospect !

Bruce Matthews' son and he plays center so he'll be head-to-head with Darrian Wright. Should be a battle and good test for both.

The Elks are large, just like most 5A teams and they have a lot of depth. A lot will depend on conditioning which I know is good with Dayton, but have no idea about the Elks. The Elks will have few, if any two-way players. Of course our improved depth will help a lot and if we can work our guys in and out on a consistent basis, fatigue should not be an element of the game. IMO

They list only one QB on their roster, a soph, Jake Burkhalter, 5-9, 170.

Sr. Jake Matthews, 6-4, 270 is the offensive center and son of former Houston Oiler, Bruce Matthews. There is another Matthews on the roster, a soph Michael, 6-2, 240, I guess a brother, but in a district that big who knows for sure.

They are definitely large on both fronts, but then what's not shown on the roster is how much time they've put into the weight room, speed, etc. Dayton has played teams with bigger kids before so playing a team this size is nothing new.

Here is the football site - it goes to the schedule which shows 2010. If you click on roster, it evidently shows last year's roster. There is an article in today's Ft. Bend Sun that refers to Burkhalter as a junior which if correct nullifies the roster on this site as 2010's as it shows him as a So.

That being the case, the younger Matthews will have his work cut out for him.

Talked to a guy I worked with who has a kid enrolled at FB Elkins.  He says the kids at Elkins think that they are going to beat Dayton pretty easily.  I really like that we scheduled some tough competition at the beginning of the season.  Heckuva litmus test.

hmmm.... I hope we can deliver a reality check to those boys.

    • It’s been awhile, but I seem to remember 5 D starters out & 2 O starters out (OL). A big difference is that Simon wasn’t involved yet. He’s totally changed LP’s rushing attack from last year as a bruising, explosive addition to Barnes, Sandolph & Bright. Last year—and early this season—LP was missing that element. Now, Coach Berneathy is not making talented players wait like many other coaches & even his predecessors at LP. If the kid can produce at the varsity level, they’re moved up. And man, has Simon produced! Over 1200 yards & 20 TD’s in less than a full season so far! It’s allowed LP to alternate RB’s where Barnes doesn’t take all the pounding. Barnes and Sandolph are also able to split out as receivers as desired to add threats that weren’t really an option last year. The PNG/LP game was a full-on tilt & good for both squads. I remember Gary Joseph in the end zone giving his son pointers as an extra set of eyes since he’d had experience with LP in past PO matchups. That was a good game. The score wasn’t really indicative of the game. Not sure anyone felt it was over until the final whistle! Good luck to y’all in Cajun Country. Bring back a win for SE Texas. (Yes. La Porte is still SETX. Ha!)
    • SEC fan bases before Texas got there: “The horns aren’t ready for this. Every week is a battle.” SEC fan bases after Texas arrived: “Texas has the easiest SEC schedule ever!” SEC fan bases after every one of their teams has lost to one or more SEC teams from the bottom half of the standings, many of whom Texas beat comfortably: 🤐
    • With a big win against the rival to close out the year… look to see Lamar make the playoffs next year
