THATS FUNNY....HUMBLE HAS THE SAME EXACT FIGHT SONG.....AND ITS IRONIC THAT YOU BOTH WEAR PORRRPLE!
Nope. Ours was written by our band director in 1957, and lyrics were added in 1959. The only part that can even be construed as copied is the middle of the song, and that's farfetched to say the least. The introduction and conclusion are both completely original, while the main segment has several added parts and a completely different set of dynamics as compared to the song the notes themselves were taken from. There's a whole different bass line, a different instrumental arrangement, a counter-melodic fanfare for the trumpets, and a pronounced percussion part, in addition to various other differences.

In other words, there is only one Cherokee.

Not quite, unless the band director sold that song to various western movies as it has been used in several of the earlier ones. My guess is that maybe he wrote your lyrics to the song but that's all. BTW a youtube search turns up another high school WNHS, not sure where they are from but they use the same song in a slightly different variation. Whoops, just found another school from Indiana playing it, song get's around for sure. Another one namesd Moniteau High in Pennsylvania

With Moniteau, the dynamics and phrasing are completely different, the instrument arrangement is... odd, to say the least, and they have a very different counter-melody. The notes for the melody may be similar, but the song as a whole is different. I couldn't find the other two.

These other high schools may have taken from the same original copy (which is an old jazz song), but the product is different. You could call ours a variation of another song, but it's a variation that's unique to our school. There are similar songs, but none are the same, unlike most other fight songs.

Okay after a little internet digging I found the original writer of Cherokee, the correct name being Indian Suite: Cherokee was written in about 1938 by Ray Noble. Look it up.
In other words you are saying that it was "Arranged" by your 1957 band director, not written.

I didn't need to. I have a copy sitting in my instrument case that credits Noble for the original work and then credits Giovale for some pretty big changes.

I would say "rewritten," or at least altered quite a bit, but you could say "arranged."

Dayton's ... it goes

ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba baaaaaaaaaaa (trumpets ring in with bum bum bum bum bumbum)

ba ba ba ba    ba ba ba ba      ba ba ba ba baaaaaaaaaaa (trumpets again)

ba ba ba ba    ba ba ba ba      ba ba ba ba baaaaaaaaaaa

ba      ba ba ba ba ba ba    ba        ba    baaaaaaaaaaaaa

What do you guys think? It's gotta be right of there with the best ever. You can also so substitute the ba's for la's or dum's.... So, it's a pretty versatile fight song as well.  ;D

"D-O-G-G-I-E-S
Come on doggies do your best?"

Come on folks, there is something wrong with that! I mean really, how does that pump you up?  ;D

"I-N-D-I-A-N-S
Scalp 'Em Indians, Scalp 'Em!"

Now that'll getcha' goin!

I will say this and it is not me being a Homer, but if you have ever been to a PNG Pep Rally and heard the intro that the band plays as they fill the seats, it is spine tingling. Starts out slow and builds up. Saw a video to it last year. If someone has a link, please post it.

Whats the song that Bridge City, Vidor, and LCM use for kick offs. Its after the fight songs. BC and LCM usually use it for kickoffs and Vidor usually comes marching off the field to it. That's a really good song.
the name of the song is slavonic. idk if brdge city plays it but i kno vidor and lcm play it at each other, it is kinda like a war. (vidor plays it better!!!! and vidor starting playing it way before lcm)
