Text Book Tackle

Recommended Posts

As an athletic trainer for over 15 years I have seen many tackling drills by many coaches.
This video clip is one of the best text book tackles I have ever got on video.
http://www.youtube.com/user/toupsgraphics?feature=mhum

The defender puts his helmets face mask between the numbers and the opponents chin.
Wraps up with both arms.
Drives with his legs, and then has enough strength to stop a running back's foward progress, drive him back and pancake tackle him.

Not meaning to belittle the running back at all, but if you have a kid playing defense, they need to watch this.

GREAT JOB AARON RIPKOWSKI!  This is a result of GREAT COACHING that begins in Bronco land in 7th grade.

It starts earlier than that!  My son has played Little League in Dayton since he was four.  So far he has 3 Division Championships and one Superbowl Championship.  He is seven now and on the Sophomore team (3-0).. you should see some of these kids hit!!

Check that video P4E and you'll prolly find a text book block.Don't remember the purple # but pushed the BH defender backwards like 25 yds.w/helmet in the numbers on 1 of the returns.

This is the video you are talking about

Count the number of Eagles that end up on their backs, I think it is 4 (or over 1/3 of the opposition's players).
The guy that Darian Wright crushes (#65) is still on his back at the end of the play.

My personal all time favorite hit was the one on the Waller kid to cause the fumble and seal the regional win. Maybe not the best hit of the game, but definitely had the most impact game wise.

John Gable... Dayton's side just erupted!! A little girl was sleeping in front of us.... she woke up terrified.  :D :D

That was definitely a moment! I imagine it sorta sounded to Waller like the fumble against Brenham sounded to us last year. That was a moment too, just the wrong kind. ;)

Good tackle nothing against the kid but thats not the best form tackle ive seen, he hits the runningback way to high and doesn't use proper leverage. If that rb is a little bigger or has more momentum he falls forward. However it is a very good baseline to start from from a tackling prospective and the kid do many things right. Helmet placement was good, he wrapped him up immediately, he did use his legs (which is not seen as much), and he also made the tackle so hay who am i to judge.

I'd say good form tackle not a perfect or great one however. (i've seen broncos tackle better)

From the drills I have seen  (junior high through college), you want the defensive player's face mask to hit between the numbers in the middle of the chest to the bottom of the face mask.  Ripkowski hit the bullseye on that.  Either way, seldom do you see a line backer from only one step going into the tackle, stand up a running back at full speed, stop his progress, drive him backwards, and then pancake tackle him.
