Is he better than Garrett Gilbert at the same stage of their playing time in high school?  Just asking?
IMO----yes he is.

We (Dayton) played Johnny M. when he was a sophomore in 2008 during our march to the finals and he was impressive. We also played G. Gilbert in 2007 when he was a sophomore and from my vantage point Gilbert wins out easily.  Tivy had the big-head when we played them and got completely out coached by Dayton. This year it seems Tivy is full of them selfs again during one game they were ahead 44 to 0 and on 4th down faked a punt late in the game to run up the score !

colton palmer QB'd that game. Manziel had played some earlier in the year when palmer had gotten into a little trouble. Manziel played receiver against us and reinjured a shoulder when LaCour tackled him after a screen pass and long run.  He did not finish the game. ;)
I was thinking Manziel played QB some - I think that was Manziel that broke his arm after diving for a long incomplete pass in the red zone LaCour was there but he never tackled him .

he had played in some leading up to that.... and you're right it was a long incomplete pass. My mistake. I just remembered Cameron running him down  and thought that was the play. I thought it was like a separated shoulder or something like that.

As far as being as good or better than gilbert..... That'd be hard to say. I don't think Tivy's Offense is anywhere near as sophisticated as LT's was. They are explosive though and they've built it to where they can use JM's strength's to the fullest extent. Better athlete?? most likely .... Better QB?? I kinda doubt it.
