Pop Warner tackles concussions

Pop Warner, the nation's oldest and largest youth football organization, is requiring a note from a doctor before letting anyone who's suffered a head injury back on the field.

The organization also announced Thursday the creation of a national medical advisory board to weigh in on concussions.

The board will be overseen by Dr. Julian Bailes, who works with the NFL Players Association on concussion-related issues and is chairman of neurosurgery at West Virginia's medical school.

Pop Warner officials estimate more than 280,000 kids play in their football leagues across 43 states. The rules and medical board cover another estimated 190,000 girls involved in Pop Warner cheerleading and dance programs.

The UIL passed a similar rule back in 2002 called "Wills Bill" named after a player who died after sustaining a head injury playing football.
It requires any player that becomes unconscious due to an injury to get written medical clearance before returing.

I think the biggest problem has to be how to recognize a concussion. Coaches and parents have to be better prepared to recognize the systems. Currently do any organizations require some “first aid / medical examination training? Question does anyone remember back in the 80’s a San Francisco 49’er playing with a soft cover over his helmet? If so who was it and why? I have thought for years now that would lessen a helmet to helmet blow.

How about a "standard" for helmet quality. Our league purchased new helmets a couple years ago. My son didn’t get one, he got the old type with hard Styrofoam in it.  After a couple weeks he complained of headaches. I broke down and purchased a $200.00 helmet with air bladders. The headaches disappeared. Luckily this year he got one of the new ones with the air padding.

I have a silver youth small for sale.....it's a DNA

I'm gonna say some bold and dareing. With the helmet to helmet contact problem in the NFL, College High School, no LL. We should all go back to the leather hats.

I know I know, I'm crazy. But the helmet is being used as weapon.
