LamarStatesports Posted December 3, 2010 Report Posted December 3, 2010 The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team will be home in the Carl Parker Center this Saturday for a 4 p.m. conference game against Jacksonville College. The Seahawks slipped to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in Region XIV play Wednesday, when they lost, 98-88, at No. 5 San Jacinto College in Pasadena. Lamar State went into that game minus freshman reserve guard Markens Charles, who broke his hand during Monday’s game with the Texas Riders. Charles, who was averaging 11.2 points per game, will be out for around six weeks.Wednesdays’ game was a disappointment for Lamar State head coach Matt Cross, who had just seen his Seahawks ranked nationally for the first time ever, coming in at No. 28 in this week’s NJCAA poll.“Our game with San Jac was played at a very high level. We had several opportunities to put the game away and come home with the win,†Cross said. “But they were able to capitalize on some very crucial turnovers and missed box-out assignments on us late in the second half, and that cost us the game.†San Jacinto, which was picked to win the Region XIV South Zone, now is 12-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action.Jacksonville also is having an impressive season start, going 10-2 overall with two conference wins. Cross expects a tough game against the Jaguars, who are coming off a 91-81 home win over Blinn College.“We have to be ready for Jacksonville,†Cross said. “They play a unique style of basketball unlike anything we have faced this year. They press and trap the entire game. So, we need to make better decisions with the ball if we want to have a chance to win Saturday.Lamar State returns to the road next Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference game at Lee College in Baytown.
samsung Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Matt Cross is doing a great job at LU-PA. Hope he sticks around a few more years at least.
