The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball team won a home non-conference game with Southern Sports Academy, 109-62, Saturday afternoon.

Lamar State also beat the Jackson, MS, prep school, 111-67, Friday night in the Carl Parker Center.

The Seahawks now are 11-2 overall with two more non-conference games left in the December part of their schedule.

Sophomore forward Roman Vaughn from Port Arthur led Lamar State on Saturday with 23 points. Three other Seahawks hit for double figures – sophomore wing Keenen Coleman (18), sophomore center Gordon Ball (13) and freshman guard David Laury (12).

Freshman forward Dame Ka and freshman center David Duncan each had nine points.

Jeff Fields led Southern Sports with 28 points. Raheem England, who led his team Friday with 15 points, was held to just three points Saturday.

Lamar State will be home again Monday at 7 p.m. against the Texas Southern University Basketball Club, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday against New Horizon Prep School.

Seahawks head coach Matt Cross is using the non-conference games to install and work on some new defensive schemes the team will need when they come back in January to play the 14 remaining conference games leading to the Region XIV post-season tournament.

Cross also sees it as a test of his team’s stamina and determination.

“We’re playing four games in five days, and the Monday and Tuesday games will be against teams with fresh legs,” Cross said. “This should help us prepare for conference play in January, when there won’t be much time to rest between very tough and physical games.”
