Grit was the key word in Barbers Hill’s first Class 4A bi-district playoff appearance in volleyball.

Wearing down Santa Fe with great defense and opportunistic offense the Eagles advanced to the regional quarterfinals with a 25-22, 25-20, 25-20 win over the Lady Indians at Lee College Tuesday night.

The first game was characterized more or less by the mistakes each team made down the home stretch. The Eagles (30-7) took control midway through the match 19-12 behind the service game of Meghan McCoy and two kills and a tip by Keely Rivera. After exchanging points over the course of several serves Sante Fe (24-11) stormed back into the game thanks to Barbers Hill mistakes. Trailing 19-13, the Lady Indians scored four consecutive points, all on Eagle mistakes.

The game eventually turned into a one-point game at 23-22 following a kill by Leslie Reitmeyer after a Sante Fe timeout. The Lady Indians served the ball into the net but closed back within at game point on a block by Kensey Mims. Senior Brittany Connally closed the game out on a kill for a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead.

Sante Fe came out strong in the second game taking an early 7-2 lead and forcing a Barbers Hill timeout. The Eagles came out of the timeout and put three quick points on the board kick started by a Connally kill. After seeing the deficit drawn back out to five at 10-5 the Eagles put together a seven point run to take their first lead in the game. Connally had one ace in the run and Rivera and McCoy each added tips for points.

The game was far from over as the Lady Indians fought back to tie the game at 16-16. Two of the next three points turned out to be the best points of the game as each team fought hard on defense for the lead. A kill by Rivera and a block by Maddy Hazelwood gave the Hill a two-point lead. Another heavily contested point closed the score to within 18-17 but it was all Eagles from that point as they took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

The third game looked much like the second; the only difference was it did not take the Eagles near as long to close the gap. After huddling for a timeout trailing 6-1, Barbers Hill stormed back seven of the next eight points. Santa Fe called a timeout with the score tied at seven but the momentum stayed in the Eagles favor as they scored four of the next five points. Three times during the match the Lady Indians closed to within one and each time came up shorts.

With the score 18-17 Sante Fe committed three consecutive lifts and then hit the ball out to give Barbers Hill a 22-17 lead. The Lady Indians rallied to within 23-20 but then hit the ball out of bounds on the next two points to lift the Eagles into the 4A Regional Quarterfinals.
