eagle65 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 Who was the best running back in Liberty history
bronco#34 Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 HARD TO SAY ON THIS ONE.WHEN I PLAYED THERE WASN'T A GOOD RUNNING BACK IN LIBERTY.THEIR RECIEVER WERE REAL GOOD
BRONX ROX Posted December 30, 2010 Report Posted December 30, 2010 I know in the last 20 yrs if any of em had any talent they would move to Dayton ;D Just kiddin :D
eagle65 Posted December 31, 2010 Author Report Posted December 31, 2010 billy lloyd, i understand was pretty good back in the 60's
broncos92 Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010
Who was the best running back in Liberty history
I would say either Henry Winters or Byron Brooks. I would probably give the nod to henry, because bryon had some off the field issues and didn't play that much. I can say when he did he was a beast.
liltex Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 Late 40's-Sterling Griffin who went to Lamar & played on the team w/Bum Phillips before transferring to Baylor w/Jr.Gajdosik from Dayton.
7mary3 Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 I believe the only notable player that really ever come out of Liberty would be Donald Douglas. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the RB White who played for OK St was pretty salty. Think he came out early for the NFL draft and didn't get drafted.
bronco#34 Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 DOUGLASS WAS A QB NOT A RB.CHRIS EDWARDS WAS A RECIEVER WHO PLAYED AT SFA,ALSO WENT TO DRAFT BUT DIDNT GET DRAFTED

He was really good, but I think the best back ever would be Henry Winters hands down.
Guest jhamilton Posted December 31, 2010 Report Posted December 31, 2010 Rubit was a hoss but when Tony Bua sp and Reggie White in the same backfield................ Hard to stop.
brett_reeves Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011
Late 40's-Sterling Griffin who went to Lamar & played on the team w/Bum Phillips before transferring to Baylor w/Jr.Gajdosik from Dayton.
Sterling was the best golfer to ever come out of this area also. His son Bobby could swing the sticks also. ;)

I played back when he played so I know what I'm talking about so pull your pants back up and respect your elders by not yelling in all caps.... 8)
Go-rilla Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 do not know about players from pre 90's..Reggie White was GREAT!!! 1st team Dave Campbells super team. He could play!
liltex Posted January 1, 2011 Report Posted January 1, 2011 The debate could go on for awhile so just ask anybody over 65 in the Liberty Co.area as they still talk about Sterling Griffin.I don't know where his newspaper scrapbook went but remember reading pages on top of pages of clippings of 3-7 tds.per game.Even Dayton RB football greats the late E.B.White & judge Glenn Pruitt talked about him many times. And yes he won over 20 golf touraments and was a golf pro @ 3 differant golf courses.Held the record @ Magnolia Ridge CC in Liberty for years w/6 under par on 9 holes verified by Whit Daniels & Coots Matthews of Boots N Coots oilwell fighters. His health is not well @ 82 at this time but @ 79 he could still shoot his age on 18 holes most days 8)
DaBears Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 Bua and White were definitely great together. Too bad Bua moved to Louisiana before his senior year. He played collegiately at Arkansas.
the wise one Posted January 2, 2011 Report Posted January 2, 2011 IDk if you could call Anthony Chambers a runningback or not because he lined up under center but he was a great runner. I believe he had a short stint in the NFL but i could be wrong, i know he played at purdue
ctowndawgfan Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 My vote goes to Henry Winters... STUD
SASQUASH22 Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 RONNIE RUBIT -PLAYED IN THE LATE 70'S (GREAT INDIVIDUAL AND FOOTBALL PLAYER )
EagleEyes Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 When I was in school we played against White and Bua when they were in the same backfield, they were good. We were tied at half 21, then they came out after half-time and blew us away.

Guest tigersvoice Posted January 5, 2011 Report Posted January 5, 2011 I'm trying to get an update on the Boone brothers from Liberty that played there in the early 1950's. Daniel (the oldest) played end and Jerry played QB. Both were at Lamar in the 1955 season. Anyone with any information? Thanks.
Matt Posted January 8, 2011 Report Posted January 8, 2011 Ronnie Rubit went to Lamar University and was paralyzed in a game trying to recover a fumble, he is a well respected chess player, he has had a pretty bad time, google (teammates for life - Rubit) pretty good read.
