The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men’s basketball program begins its third year of intercollegiate competition on Thursday, Nov. 2, with a home exhibition game against an all-star team from Louisiana at 7 p.m. in the Carl Parker Center, 1800 Lakeshore Drive on the LSC-PA campus. LSC-PA head coach Don Bryson has three players returning from his 2005-06 squad: 6-3 forward/post Jared Westbrook from Beaumont Central High School, 6-3 forward Kevin Charles from Port Arthur Lincoln and 6-4 guard/forward from Beaumont West Brook. Charles, the third leading scorer and leading rebounder for the Seahawks last season, holds the team’s single-game rebounding record with 15. Westbrook was just four points behind Charles this past year. “The Seahawks basketball team has improved each year. This year, our three returning players taking leadership roles, and we’ve got a lot of talented freshmen,†Bryson said. Bryson’s freshman include Nathan Stringfield (6-2), an All-District and All-City guard from 5-A El Paso Coronado High School; DeMarcus Johnson (6-3), an All-State guard from Cathedral High School in Beaumont; Marcus Houston (6-2), an All-District guard from 3-A Jasper; Cody Guidry (6-5), an All-District forward from 3-A Hamshire-Fannett; and Andre Hawthorne, the leading scorer on the 2005-06 Beaumont West Brook team. “With just three sophomores back, the freshmen are going to get a lot of playing time,†Bryson said. “We also have some other very talented kids on the team – such as Larry Rideaux from Ozen and Josh Broussard from Anderson – who didn’t earn honors in high school, but could make a mark in junior college ball.†The Seahawks, 4-24 during the 2006-07 season, will join a Division III conference this year after playing as an independent for two seasons, mostly playing Division I teams that award full scholarships to student-athletes. Division II schools have partial scholarships, while Division III schools do not offer athletic scholarships. Lamar State-PA will play 13 pre-season games and one tournament before kicking off the first year in the UPS Metro Conference, which is comprised of eight two-year colleges from the Dallas area, including North Lake College, the 2006 National Junior College Athletic Association national champion, and Cedar Valley College, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation in the NJCAA’s pre-season poll. The Seahawks will be on the road Nov. 4 at Lee College in Baytown and will return home for games against two Division I teams, Blinn College (Nov. 7) and Angelina College (Nov. 11). Lamar State-PA’s non-conference schedule also includes home games against San Jacinto College (Nov. 16), Lee College (Nov. 18), Northwestern Louisiana State University junior varsity (Nov. 29), Bossier Parish Community College (Jan. 8) and Southern University-Shreveport (Jan. 10) The Seahawks also will play a home exhibition game on Nov. 21 against the all-star Houston Blaze.
