Brookeland vs. West Sabine Game Thread/West Sabine wins/Comments

I have seen West Sabine play and they are good, very good. I haven't seen the others in the district play, so my veiw from the bench is limited here.

The question I have is what is going on in Brookeland? I know that they have had a successful program for many years, even up to 2 or 3 years ago. So, what has happened?

Just seems strange to me. I know programs go through ebbs and tides.

To CATMAN: Bitterness will get you nowhere in life. If jealousy's color is green, bitterness must be magenta or burnt siena. I don't know the particulars of the situation, but whatever happened was in the past, and living there is just plain sad!
I hope it will get better in BROOKELAND they have some good basketball player over there.

Going to extend an olive branch here to anyone who may read this. I don't pretend to know what goes on down there (being out of high school 15 years I lose track with EVERYTHING on this level), but I hope things improve in Brookeland. No matter where the kids play, the fact is that they need a place to play! We need to remember that these are just kids playing a game and we are the adults talking about it.

If I must...four boys moved to Pineland last year from Brookeland. Three others moved to Jasper and another to Newton. That's eight if my math is correct. Of Pineland's four: one was an 8th grader, one a junior and two were seniors.

Ironically, the junior was approved for varsity play while the seniors were not. While the junior got limited varsity play, the two seniors were relegated to junior varsity sports for their senior year. They chose to do that rather than continue as varsity players at Brookeland (I'll let each of you read into that what you will).

I believe all the others that moved to other schools were approved to play by their respective district commitees, but I'm not certain if any of them actually played varsity ball (I will again allow you to read into that what you will).

The Pineland junior and 8th grader are now senior and freshman. They both play, but they are in no way the only reason West Sabine is playing so well. West Sabine's senior class has been very good since they were together in junior high. They have lots of depth, and the two former Brookeland players add to that. Would they be good without them? I absolutely believe so. Are they better with them? I believe they are.

Where does that leave us? Pineland is good. Hope this helps the inquisitive types.

Thanks for the input soonerbeintexas. It has been a couple of years now that I have been to Brookeland's gym/s and each time I left with the strong impression from all of the banners and trophy's in the cases that that school had a long history of good, very good basketball. Now, it just seems that they have faded away fast.
I know that schools swing from the bottom of the district to the top and then back down again over a period of time. This is the reason for my question earlier in this string.
Thanks for providing insight. I will not even attempt to "read into" the situation anymore that you described.

How many of the players that moved were baseball players?

Of the four that moved to Pineland, three were eligible to play high school baseball and the other was in junior high. Two of the three varsity-eligible players played...both seniors and both JV.

    • I’m super excited for this game.  PNG has the team and game plan that will slow TH down.  No way we can stop them the entire game, but I feel if we slow them down we can win similar to what we did last year to Lake Creek and SOC.
    • Well Mustang fans it's time for my annual end of season rant. I've had so much company up here on the soapbox that I may have to start charging rent. After 3 years I don't think anything needs to be said. We all know what's wrong. We all know why. So what's the decision at the next board meeting? IMO, there's been enough imaginary success for the board to rubber stamp the Superintendent's vision for our future student athletes. #make every second count Due to soft scheduling and a weaker than normal district. The luck of knocking off 2 ranked opponents early when they were not healthy or still trying to figure it out. Also led to a premature ranking and a hollow DCTF weekly award. The 2 late season losses vs ranked teams proves what we know has been the biggest problem.  Football 19-15 .559 Baseball 9-35 .205 Basketball 19-35 .352 GBB 11-29 .275 Softball 1-22 .043 Volleyball 0-38 .000 Overall 59-174 .253   For anyone living in the district, I ask that you contact you're elected board members publicly and privately. Don't let them think this is exceptable. Be the solution to the equation. Not the divisor. This starts at the top and falls heavily upon those walking the halls. They deserve better.
    • I don't think it's 6-5 maybe 4-3
    • Sounds like a good idea, and something’s been needed for a long time. I know—where my kids & grandkids live now (DFW area)—schools are like revolving doors for athletic purposes. I don’t think the DPISD & LPISD option enrollment are anywhere like that. I assume it’s pretty above board since it was an arrangement apparently agreed to also by the state. I do know some kids that went to LPISD elementary schools in DP chose to go to DPHS because of the district rating. (Of course, at the time, DPISD and DP in general wasn’t very racially mixed like La Porte.) LPISD has a high number of kids on assistance programs compared to DP. Say what you will, it does make it more difficult for educational purposes and scores can reflect as much. LPISD is still rated high even with that challenge. Some of the kids that chose DPHS were very solid athletes that I’m sure LP would love to have had attend LPHS. Of course, part of the big rivalry between DP & LP has always been because DP ‘looked down’ on LP even though we worked side-by-side. Now that Shell DP refinery has been sold to PEMEX, DP is changing. Some aren’t happy about it. Some of us in LP are kinda tickled about it after the history.
    • Got my hotel booked...an hour away. They're having some kind of Light festival, so busy times in Nat.
