LSC-PA Seahawks open hoop season with exhibition win

The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks tuned up for the opening of their third intercollegiate basketball season with a 75-52 exhibition game win over the Louisiana All-Stars at the Carl Parker Center in Port Arthur.

Sophomore post Jared Westbrook from Beaumont and freshman forward Cody Guidry from Hamshire-Fannett each scored 20 points to lead the Seahawks.

Lamar State-PA sophomore forward Kevin Charles from Port Arthur contributed 12 points, while sophomore forward Lyndon Gilford and freshman guard Andre Hawthorne, both from Beaumont, each scored nine points.

The All-Stars were led by Harvey Potier with 18 points and Leon Bias with 13 points.

Louisiana took an early lead in the game, but the Seahawks rallied behind Guidry’s eight points and nine first-half rebounds to lead 32-19 at the break.

Westbrook took charge in the second half, scoring 14 of his 20 points while Guidry added 12 points.

The Seahawks travel to Baytown on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against the Lee College Runnin’ Rebels, who were 15-16 overall and 10-12 in the highly competitive Division I Region XIV conference this past season.

Port Arthur freshman Dominique Keller scored 34 points as the Runnin’ Rebels topped Kingwood College, 131-82, on Wednesday to open their season.

Noah Cole got a late scholarship offer from a four-year school in Arkansas that didn't want him to lose a year of eligiblity by playing at Lamar State-PA for one season.

Noah is pretty short for college competition, but it would have been interesting to see how he fared against the teams the Seahawks play, which includes the 2006 Division III national champion and several teams that currently are ranked in the Top 20 in Division I and Division III.
