Boutte opted to play a varsity schedule even though he did not have a senior class just yet.The reason I know this is because Silsbee's '98 team wore Ozen out that year, beating Ozen in both district games by over 35 both times. I remember Boutte telling me that he will eventually get them back. He did in the Perkins years, beating Silsbee very soundly in every district game in those 4 years.
Lazeek Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Ozen still has a basketball team? :D :D :D
BLUEDOVE3 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011
We used to beat them all the time before Kendrick Perkins arrived, which was like in 2000. We didn't beat them in 9 years after. Beat them last year @ Ozen in OT. Beat them again yesterday @ Central.
Talent level went down. Central better enjoy it now ;D
BMTSoulja1 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Not talent, probably coaching. It's hard to fill Boutte's shoes. And it's showing...

TheGame Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Don t get me wrong Boutte was an excellent coach but he never played or dropped thirty on opposing teams. Ozen had a good run but he left when talent did. He s no dummy. Ozen had all tje best players from all over BMT.
BMTSoulja1 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I do understand what you are saying, but the job he did on that 2007 state finalist team with 'medeocre' talent was superior coaching. That team consisted of Kris Richards and a bunch of 'ok' players. They beat Central twice that year, which IMO had the more talented team that year. then they proceeded to get win after win in the playoffs, beating teams by like 1 or 2 points. Ozen's coaching was a thing of beauty that year.

But you talk about talent? A total of... Wait for it.... 2 Ozen Graduates went on to play and stay in D1 (last more than a year) and one went Pro. In that same span Central had how many? Three play D1... The talent wasnt that far off. What he did have early on was height but Boutte coached that thing!
ForeverADog Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I thought Ozen has at least 4 D1 players? Well 3 since Perk turned pro. But Keena Young (BYU) Brandon Chappell (Lamar) and Kris Richards (Tulane) were all D1.
BMTSoulja1 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 I think he said within the last 3 years...
BLUEDOVE3 Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 For some reason it's just hard for me to consider Lamar a true D-1 school. I like the term mid-major and thats kind of pushing it.
