LamarStatesports Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 The Lamar State College-Port Arthur men's basketball team defeated Jacksonville College, 55-51, Sunday night in the semi-final round of the Region XIV Tournament in the Herrington Patriot Center at the University of Texas-Tyler.The 24-9 Seahawks advance to Monday night's 8 p.m. championship game against the 29-3 San Jacinto College Ravens, the No. 4 Division I junior college team in the nation.The win over Jacksonville was a defensive battle with each team committing 19 fouls. Lamar State sophomore guard Vonn Jones took a seat on the bench two minutes into the first half with two fouls. Dion Waiters joined him a few minutes later, also with two fouls.In spite of missing two key players, the Seahawks led by 10 points, 18-8, with seven minutes remaining in the half. But the Jaguars went on a 12-2 run to tie the game and then pulled ahead by three before Lamar State tied the game 27-27 going into halftime.The second half was a repeat of the first, with Lamar State leading by eight points with four minutes remaining and then holding on for the win.Sophomore guard Keenen Coleman led Lamar State with 10 points in a game in which all nine Seahawks scored.Lamar State now has won seven straight games including a 20-point comeback on Saturday to beat Kilgore College, 64-58 in overtime.On Saturday, the Seahawks dominated No. 9 Trinity Valley Community College, 72-56.San Jacinto College, the top tournament seed, won the conference South Zone to earn a first-round bye.The Ravens advanced to the championship game after burying Blinn College, 90-54, and dumping Paris Junior College, 79-59.San Jac beat Lamar State twice during the regular season, 98-88 on Dec. 1, and 83-72 on Feb. 12 in a game the Seahawks led with two minutes left in regulation.The championship game will be broadcast live on Lamar State's new “Seahawks Athletics†website (athletics.lamarpa.edu).
