AggiesAreWe Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 I pay taxes in 4 counties.Support all bonds.
Guest Brubaker Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 The real reason Smitty. The board got pressure to kill this bond before it got started because it would've been throwing good money away on old buildings. We don't need to waste millions gussying up old stuff. IT HAD NOTHING to do with a football stadium. You are GROSSLY misinformed... GROSSLY.
Guest Brubaker Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 My answers... yes, yes, and depends. The next bond try can't be a maintenance bond, I would vote NO to throw money at old facilities. If it's a bond to build new schools, I'm all over it yes.
Razor Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Would totally NOT support anything that throws more money into old buildings...this has already been done once, to the tune of about $18 million...this would make another $25 million...more repairs will be needed in 5-6 more years so the price tag keeps increasing and we still have 60 year old buildings
Guest Brubaker Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011
I pay taxes in 4 counties.Support all bonds.
That's interesting, are you a business owner or property owner? We have some business/property owners in Nederland who campaigned hard against the last bond. Give us some of your insight.
DogOne Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Just curious. Opponents of the last bond, which was overwhelmingly defeated, were accused of not supporting the kids and being against NISD. But now it's OK to oppose a bond if you don't personally like it. I don't understand the difference.
PN-G bamatex Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 This is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.Nederland needs a bond. With various school organizations and extra-curricular activities, I have been in several high schools. I've been in Nederland, LC-M, Sabine Pass, West Brook, Hamshire-Fannett, Lumberton, a number of high schools outside of this area, and of course PN-G. I used to think that the old PN-G middle schools were bad. That was before I walked into NHS. I mean no offense to the good people of Nederland - I have many friends there - but that high school is by far in the worst condition of any school I have seen. I have been in schools that were built before NHS that are not in such bad shape. My school was built two decades before NHS and was in better shape before construction for this bond began. I understand the concerns with finances, especially right now, but the citizens of Nederland need to take a walk through NHS's main building and see the bad shape it's in, and then go tour some other local schools. Other parts of the Nederland campus, namely the PAC (because it's only a few years old), are in excellent shape, but the main building needs to be replaced.
Razor Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Good point, PNG and like it or not, schools in that kind of shape cost serious money to maintain...the question becomes, how long do you keep throwing money into that hole before you find that to be a bad investment...some folks don't see the forest for the trees and what it leads to is a situation that will only continue to worsen...I will get off of my soap box for now...lol

DogOne Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 Port Arthur is full of brand new schools and yet no one is beating down the door to move to there.

PoppaBearstarr Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 I agree with not throwing new money into an old school, you always seem to get more value in building a new building. Right now it is a hard time because of the economy, but you have to look at it like investing in your community, if you wait to long to do anything, it will cost you a lot more to build later. Like a snowball rolling down hill. Do you do a little every 5 years or a huge one every 40.....

Your property value is directly tied to the schools. I have rental property just like the people who paid to get the bond defeated. If my taxes go up then the rent goes up too! I make my money either way and my property maintains or increases in value because people actually want to live here and send their kids to our schools.I never really understood their logic in paying a guy to shoot down the bond. It is very short sighted if you ask me. But then again they are old and could probably careless what happens to Nederland in 20 years.

dawgnut Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 Aggies you can't use logic with smitty! If you explain to him that you own multiple properties and that you will probably pay more in taxes than the average citizen like I have on several occasions, smitty just changes talking points. He doesn't want truth, he just dislikes all governments, local, state, and federal.
samsung Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 Whats the deal. In the last bond we were told that this had to be done now!!! But now they are saying it can wait. Which is it?
smitty Posted March 18, 2011 Author Report Posted March 18, 2011 He NEVER answered the specific question. Or didn't you realize that? Now he has, finally!
