i use a thompson-center 25-06, and i love it.  tight groupings at long range, only a moderate kick, and a more than adequate round for taking down deer.  the plus to the TC is for less than 200 dollars you can buy a new barrel and change the caliber to just about anything you want.  of course, you don't get to go out and spray the woods with bullets.  you're only getting one shot, so you better make it count.

Except when you are shooting a 2,000 pound bull moose in Canada from 400 yards?

My 300 Weatherby Mag... does not get out much since I have yet to take a trip to Canada. :P I bought the gun on a whim since I just had to give back a Savage Anshutz .22 (1200.00) gun that I had just inherited... Long story- but the short of it was my cousin had yet to pick a gun from the collection and guess which one he wanted ( I had already nab the Ruger) ... exactly the 1200.00 .22 long rifle. Well I went to the gun shop next to Academy to see if I could replace  the Anshutz and much to my surprise it was a 1200.00 .22 rimfire an I said heck with that  I bought a pristine Winchester Model 70 in 300 Wby with a 26" barrel.. a pretty unique gun in itself... but it does not get used much because I prefer hunting with the Ruger or the Marlin... No doubt it can handle the larger game but I have yet to make a hunt for elk or moose. Maybe next year ;D unless your paying and in that case we can leave tomorrow!

Is a 300 Win Mag more or less powerful than a 300 Weatherby Mag ?  I've always wanted a 300 win mag.

  • 3 weeks later...
Been looking for a Rem 700 in 243, 25-06 or 7mm-08 since after Xmas. I guess Xmas has depleted everyones stock. I have a giftcard to Academy and would prefer to buy one there, the prices are also better. Anyone know where any new 700s are available locally?

When do you plant your Summer deer food?
[/quote]
Depends on what you plant.  Are you wanting to feed them in the summer or do you want it planted in summer to feed into fall/winter?  Here is a good site:
