Next BB Coach

Of the few names that have surfaced so far as candidates, I am most intrigued at this point with Matt Cross.  However, for the sake of discussion, I am sure that there are some of you brainiac's who have done much more research and are paying much more attention to the landscape of college basketball and know who some of the up and comers are who could be really good candidates for the next men's head coach.  That said, lets start a list of who the really good candidates are that are realistic to come to LU ie....Coach K at Duke would be a great coach at LU but is totally unrealistic as a candidate....get my drift.  Let the banter begin! :D

I am expecting a top assistant, one that has been a head coach at one time, to get the job here at Lamar.

I was told last night that former Texas A&M head coach (no, not him ;D) Melvin Watkins is ready to get back as a head coach. I bet he throws his hat in the ring. Not sure he is a good fit, Lamar may be looking for someone younger.

Glenn Cyprien is great for LU.  He is not a head coach because he had a misstep and we would be taking a chance on him but we would be lucky to have a guy who has all of the connections he has plus he is a great x and o guy.  With that said I am not against Matt Cross at all.

In that case, Watkins would make a good fit. He is 56 years old, but Lamar may need an experienced guy. He is currently the associate head coach at Missouri.


Willis and Brooks will get interviews.

Just spoke with a local high school coach who is close to the program and he stated that a minority WILL be hired and the leading canidate is Capel.

Yep. But sometimes you got to take what you can get. Also, sometimes the leading canidate doesn't get the job, for whatever reason. ;)

That's a good point but not a reason to hire a person.  Didn't work out so well for LU with Lazeek's buddy Deane.  We need the best person we can get for the job, no matter what.

5 years at 1.5 million but his buyout is a little over 2 million.

I asked because you have been known to make some sarcastic posts in the past - and I just find it difficult to think that a guy who took OU to the Elite 8 would be interested in the Lamar job. 

So I'm genuinely asking - are you serious?

The list of experienced coaches is pretty sad to me.  I would be more excited about Matt Cross or the Nederland coach.  Please no Melvin Watkins or Willis Wilson.  Just my opinion.

A good friend of mine who is a HS BBall coach in Cental Texas told me tonight he has been at camps that Capel was at and he is not impressed.  He thinks it would be a mistake if LU went that way.  Just one man's opinion.  I hope we get a lot more possible candidates to talk about.
