I had three friends in from out of state and we went to the LA side of the causeway about a month ago. They went home with fillets from 158 Reds and Specks from two days of fishing.

A friend and myself nearly limited (9) on flounder at Sabine Lake last August. They have been biting in the Trinity as well, especially along eastern edge down to Third Bayou. The limit is 2 now though so not as great.


Calcasieu has been good lately too.

In my experience fishing under birds yields mostly smaller trout. I'm no professional, but that has been my experience.

[/quote]  I think that is mostly true.  However, we occasionally find a lot of keepers under the birds.  Solid 17-18 inchers.  Hasn't happened yet this year for me.

Always hit or miss.  I generally find there to be a mix.  Slow your retrieve a bit.  The larger ones are often under the schoolies.
Some times I find all keepers in a school and sometimes none at all.

About three weeks ago we hit quite a few reds about 100 yards off of the south levee in Sabine Lake, maybe about in the middle. There were lots of school sized specks and quite a few good size sand trout.

I think the bird action has been weak the last few days.

Thanks TVC, was thinking of trying the South End tomorrow but hate to drive all the way down there if the bite has slowed down...May just try to grind out a few reds on the North End.

Went out of Cow Bayou this morning and ran into a flock of birds at daylight.  Hooked up with a fish just about every cast for 30 minutes and everything was undersized.  Picked up a couple trout that were just big enough.  Couldn't find anymore birds after that.  Plenty of shad in the water.

The birds were working in Cow Bayou again today.  Only brought home eight trout, but I bet I threw back another 20 that were 14"...a lot of fun today and beautiful weather.

TVC, lol...I hear ya.  That La. license is looking more and more like the way to go.

Mat,  I have hit the outfall a few times over the last few days without any luck.  I saw one guy boat a nice red there yesterday, but that is about it. Monday a guy hooked on to something that I am guessing was a big drum or gar.  It pulled him and his jonboat out into the middle of the river.  I left before he landed it, but it was quite a site.

I hit the North end lake Wed.  Nothing happening.  Not even on the LA side.  Tide was way out and not moving...not good.

Really surprised that the bird action was non-existent.  Typically,  during this time of the year,  the birds are awesome.  Confusing. 
Seriously considering a run to Big Lake next.  Never been there tho.

Have any of you been there?

Turn onto the south levee road and go a short distance and turn left into the parking lot. It has two ramps and has a small canal that has an outlet into the lake. It is almost completely blocked from the current and wind. It is probably about a mile closer than the marina ramp as the crow flies or almost two miles closer by road.

LOL!  Thanks tvc.  Could you get a little more specific?    LOL      Yeah,  I forgot about that ramp.  I like that one better than the one by the RV park.  That one is too steep.
