BRIDGE CITY — Chalk up another District 21-3A Track & Field Championship for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs.

The Mustangs dominated all the sprints and the relays to capture the school’s fourth consecutive 21-3A title.

The Mustang boys won with 181 points while Orange County rival Bridge City placed second in racking up 144 points.

WO-S is just another strong regional track meet away from trying to earn its third straight state track title. First things first though, was district.

“I couldn’t be happier for our kids,” said an elated WO-S coach Toby Foreman. “We came out here with poise and got all the things that we pretty much wanted to accomplish done. We got the stick around the track and executed well.”

The Mustangs ran in uniforms with 112 percent on their sleeves in honor of quarterback Reggie Garrett, who passed away during the football campaign.

“Reggie is such a part of what we do still,” said Foreman. “The kids honored him well today with the way they performed. A lot of people remember his as our quarterback but most don’t remember that he finished second in the discus last year as a track athlete.”

WO-S won the 400-meter relay in a time of 42.03 seconds with the quartet of Ed Ivory, Justin Thomas, Phillip Jones and Mark Roberts.

The four-man WO-S crew of Roberts, Jones, DeCarlos Renfro and Jarodd Ross nabbed the 800-meter relay in 1:29.47 and the foursome of Renfro, Ross, Janice and Derek Ledet won the 1,600-meter relay in 3:27.09.

The Mustangs went 1-2-3 in both the sprints.

Ivory won the 100 meters in 10.61 followed by Thomas (10.64) and Janice (10.74). Thomas came back to win the 200 meters in 21.88 followed by Ivory (21.98) and Roberts (22.28).

Janice also ran a blazing 50.31 to easily capture the 400 meters and Jones, as usual, dominated the 110-meter hurdles in 14.19.

The Mustangs have been so impressive the last two seasons. The scary part of the whole deal is that this is the deepest team yet.

“We have about seven guys that can run with anybody and that’s a nice commodity to have,” said Foreman. “It’s tough as a coach because we’re fortunate enough to have all of these nice parts and you have to figure out where they fit in certain races.”

Going into the district meet, WO-S had the top-rated times in the state in Class 3A in the 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay, 100 meters and 200 meters.

The last time WO-S won four straight district meets was from 1993-96.

Bridge City’s Kirby Shepherd was golden in two events as the Cardinal distance man won both the 800 meters (1:59.80) and the 1,600 meters (4:50.62).

Hamshire-Fannett won the girls division in a tight race. The Lady Longhorns finished with 121 points followed closely by Bridge City (115), Silsbee (111) and Orangefield (108).

Bridge City senior Mary Nguyen had a tremendous way to finish up on her home turf as she downed rival Carli Langley of Hamshire-Fannett in the 1,600 meters. Nguyen turned in a time of 5:32.24 while Langley was second at 5:34.38. Langley won the 3,200 meters Saturday with Nguyen finishing second.

Lady Cardinal Bree Fontenot continued her dominance in the 400 meters, winning it with a time of 1:00.26.

WO-S’ Johnesha Sims, after suffering through a nagging leg injury the last couple weeks, returned in true form by cruising to a 12.14 finish to easily win the 100 meters.

Orangefield came away with two first-place finishes.

The 1,600-meter relay unit of Hannah Walles, Rebecca Higginbotham, Kasidy Hayes and Vivian Luong won with a time of 4:20.90 and Haley Permenter captured the 300-meter hurdles in 50.30.
