The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various government reports:Forty-three percent of all poor households actually own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.

Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.

Only 6 percent of poor households are overcrowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in Paris, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)

Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.

Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.

Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and more than a third have an automatic dishwasher

LOL! You Repubs are sneaky! Gotta watch you fellas. 80% of the poor had air conditioning. I bet 70% worked for what they owned.

Just 70%? Shouldn't the other 30% work for it as well?
Not in our type of system. The system is geared towards having the poor remain below a certain poverty level.

While I disagree with that point for the most part, I fail to see where that's relevant to the question.

I could not have said it better myself. You are correct that the system is geared toward keeping the poor down.

Almost to a person they vote Democratic. Ever care to guess why they keep them down with welfare? When you can keep a family living in the same government housing project for 3 generations, you have a built in voting bloc.

If it wasn't true, the nation's political landscape would look nothing like it does today and we would be facing entirely different issues.

You are NEVER going to have a system where everything is equal.  Regardless of the politics, whose running government, etc. there will ALWAYS be some " have nots".  Some  choose the class warfare approach as simply a way to get elected in to office by making those who have less believe that their "dilemma" will be solved if they just vote for this guy or that guy.  If we took the total  assets in this country and divided them amongst everyone equally today, within a very short time, the very people that are villified as "having too much" or "having benefitted from the sytem unfairly" would again have the majority of assets and somebody would say "vote for me" and I will make sure we "re-divide" those assets so that rich guy is no longer screwing you out of your "fair share".  It has become fashionable and politically correct to equate poverty with nobility and success with "unfairness".  Our current system  encourages those that have less to, rather than seeking their own solution,  have government simply acquire things for them from others.  It's readily apparent to me that this approach has done nothing but create more dependence on the government instead of less.  The "take from the rich and give to the poor" approach  is going to eventually eliminate the rich and make the majority of the country government employees and welfare recipients.  This country did not become a major economic power and the most desireable place on earth to live by redistributing wealth but that has become,in the eyes of many, the preferred solution to all ills.  Will we EVER realize that government is horribly inefficient at nearly everything it does and should NOT be looked upon as the logical/reasonable/efficient solution to most issues?

People didn’t just sweat their way to upward mobility in the past. The federal government’s role in the creation of American middle class is undeniable and central. And our middle-class republic didn’t crash because average Americans forgot how to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

I’m not going to pretend to have all of the answers, but I know one of the major causes in our decline has been the growing gap between the rich and the rest of us. That gap is the widest it’s been in a century, and the future isn’t looking promising. Job growth is disproportionately coming from low-wage areas like food prep and retail clerks.

The growing cleavage between the classes can be traced back as far as 1979. That’s when gains in productivity began to outpace worker incomes. That fact alone can help explain the frustration of many Middle Americans.

Some of us achieved the college degree our parents never earned, and we could afford the finer things they couldn’t. Most working Americans just soldiered on. Wage gains kept flat-lining or falling in comparison to the costs of living. The climb of upward mobility got steeper. Wage shortfalls could be made up with E-Z credit, for a while anyway. The ruins of that way of life are all around us.

Much is made of the massive federal deficit these days. I have a way we can solve that: more jobs. More jobs mean more growth and more tax revenue. Problem is, America’s job creators – the middle class consumers – are tapped out. Business owners can’t hire until they have consumers to sell to. That leaves the job of stimulating demand to the government. Time for government to lay the groundwork for our future by investing in our middle class.

That is, if we really want an America with a middle class
But we all know that the Reps and the Bush Oil machine will not let that hapen..Income inequality grew significantly in 2005, ( The Bush Years) with the top 1 percent of Americans - those with incomes that year of more than $348,000 - receiving their largest share of national income since 1928, analysis of newly released tax data shows.

The top 10 percent, roughly those earning more than $100,000, also reached a level of income share not seen since before the Depression.

While total reported income in the United States increased almost 9 percent in 2005, the most recent year for which such data is available, average incomes for those in the bottom 90 percent dipped slightly compared with the year before, dropping $172, or 0.6 percent.

The gains went largely to the top 1 percent, whose incomes rose to an average of more than $1.1 million each, an increase of more than $139,000, or about 14 percent.

The new data also shows that the top 300,000 Americans collectively enjoyed almost as much income as the bottom 150 million Americans. Per person, the top group received 440 times as much as the average person in the bottom half earned, nearly doubling the gap from 1980

Blue- Just because you can copy and paste an article from the Wichita Eagle that was written by someone from the Kansas City Star does not make it accurate.  Those of you who would confiscate the assets of the "rich" via the tax system are going to make our system one that disincentivizes productivity.  When that happens, there will be no rich from whom to confiscate.  What will you do at that point?  Those same "rich" people already pay the vast majority of all taxes already collected.

Here is some more of your Rep TAXCUTS.....- In Texas, firefighters aren't just battling the wild fires raging around Austin and Houston. The state's first responders have also had to deal with budget cuts affecting everything from fuel purchases to hoses and oxygen tanks.

In some cases, fire officials say, firefighters have had to pay out of pocket for basic necessities like proper protective gear and fuel to get them to the scene. One fire department that battled the blazes in Bastrop County had to pay for a hose, recalled Bastrop City Fire Chief Henry Perry, speaking to The Huffington Post during a break from working the wild fires.

"That fire department has been on this fire every day," he said. "Before this fire, they were having to buy stuff out of their own pocket." Perry said he knows of at least one other department whose firemen had to pay for equipment maintenance and engine fuel.

Earlier this week, HuffPost reported that Gov. Rick Perry, the GOP front-runner for president, had signed off on millions in firefighting cuts as part of the state's most recent budget legislation. The Texas Forest Service's funding has gone from $117.7 million in the 2010-2011 budget years to $83 million in the 2012-2013 budget years.

Severe cuts have also hit assistance grants to volunteer fire departments throughout Texas. The grants decreased from $30 million per year in 2010 and 2011 to $13.5 million per year in 2012 and 2013. These are cuts that firemen are now dealing with.

Rep Tax Cuts  at their finest :o :o

More HuffPo nonsense.

Most firefighting is local or volunteer and does not come from the state.

The new Texas cuts in the budget have only been in effect for one week as the new budget goes into effect. Any prior lack of equipment as mentioned in the article have nothing to do with this year's budget cuts. I know that our city budget goes into effect October 1st and we will order new vehicles but they will not be delivered until some time next year like in January. Even if our budget is cut, it will not show up for several months because that is the way capital purchases are made.

So this year's budget had nothing to do with equipment at the scene or resources. The local fire chief that is complaining about the lack of a budget needs to complain to his city council or county commissioner's court.

The political spin doesn't hold up very well to the facts.

    • Why play in Rusk?   15 miles farther you guys could have played in Jacksonville at the Tomato Bowl
    • The freshman RB that was called up early is as others have described. If he chooses a solid path, he could easily be LP’s first 5 star. That’s saying something with the RB’s that have come through La Porte. There have been Olympic gold medalists, NFL players, and others. But, no 5 stars I’m aware of… Let’s hope he listens to solid role models, and realizes the opportunity he’s been given to use the talent he’s been gifted. On top of that, Barnes, Sandolph, and Bright are still there. Not sure how coach keeps them all happy spreading the ball around.
