3A Second-Round Breakdowns

11/22/2006

Division I

Did we say something about this being Gilmer's bracket to lose? Well, they lost it, and now this field is pretty wide open, with Texarkana Liberty-Eylau suddenly the team to beat.

Below, TexasFootball.com breaks down every second-round game.

REGION I REGIONAL SEMIFINALS PICKS:

Fort Stockton (7-3) vs. Andrews (4-7): The Panthers had a bye week to prepare for Andrews, who edged two-win Levelland on a last-minute field goal in their Bi-district matchup. Fort Stockton cures its turnover problem and rolls by Andrews.

Canyon (9-2) vs. Wylie (9-2): With a big win over undefeated Decatur last week, Wylie has momentum on its side and will run straight at Canyon, who allowed a pair of 100-yard rushers in their first-round matchup against WF Hirschi. Quarterback Gary Edwards leads Wylie past Canyon with another impressive performance after rushing for nearly 200 yards and three touchdowns against Decatur. This one, though, will be closer than you think.

REGION II REGIONAL SEMIFINALS PICKS:

Royse City (10-1) vs. Kennedale (8-3): After allowing 337 passing yards in the second half of their Bi-district contest against Dallas Roosevelt, Kennedale is outmatched. Royse City quarterback Richard Morrison, who passed for three scores in a first-round win over Prosper, propels Royse City over Kennedale. Chapel Hill (6-5) vs. Liberty-Eylau (8-3): A shocking victory over top-ranked Gilmer in the opening round has Liberty-Eylau primed for a state title run. Chapel Hill finds it difficult to contain tailback LaMichael James, and Liberty-Eylau easily glides to the Regional Finals.

REGION III REGIONAL SEMIFINALS PICKS:

Robinson (8-2) vs. Palestine (9-2): Robinson’s high scoring offense faces Palestine’s shutdown defense. This is one of the harder games to pick, but a great defensive effort will lead Palestine over Robinson.

Silsbee (9-2) vs. Columbia (7-4): Columbia is a much-improved team from what it was at the start of the season. The Roughnecks won its Bi-district game 26-12 over Bellville, a team they lost to by 29 points in the second game of the season. Columbia continues to rise and downs Silsbee behind a strong rushing performance from Jared Flannel.

REGION IV REGIONAL SEMIFINALS PICKS:

La Vernia (8-3) vs. Pleasanton (6-5): A pair of standout quarterbacks duel in a high-scoring game that is likely decided by the better quarterback. La Vernia’s Cory Baker has a slight advantage over Pleasanton’s Niko Salinas, and Baker leads La Vernia to a close victory.

Ingleside (10-1) vs. La Feria (7-3): Ingleside needs to score enough points to compensate for a vulnerable defense, which should not be a problem. Ingleside’s offense proves too much and outscores La Feria in a shootout.

Division II:

Below, TexasFootball.com breaks down every second-round game.

REGION I AREA PICKS:

Monahans (9-1) vs. Snyder (8-2): The Monahans defense has allowed only 19 points in its last six games, and the Lobos enjoyed a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Monahans will beat Snyder for the second time this season and advance to the Regional Semifinals.

Vernon (6-5) vs. Sweetwater (9-2): Quarterback Duone Cunning led a heavy rushing attack for Sweetwater in its Bi-district win over Argyle. Vernon will not be able to hold off Sweetwater, which set a school record in rushing yards last week.

Clint (9-1) vs. Midland Greenwood (10-1): Clint is the benefactor of a bye week following a big win over Fort Stockton. Clint will stop Greenwood’s rushing game to score an upset with a defense that excels at creating turnovers.

Graham (6-5) vs. Sanger (9-2): Quarterback Nathan Pegues dominated Clyde in Sanger’s Bi-district victory with four touchdowns. Pegues and Sanger roll past Graham with a running attack that few teams have been able to stop.

REGION II AREA PICKS:

Madison (10-0) vs. Celina (11-0): Madison running back Shawnbrey McNeal is dangerous and can win games, but Celina has an edge on defense with a group that has not allowed more than 10 points in the last nine games.

Pleasant Grove (4-7) vs. Canton (7-4): Running back Sam Buker, who scored twice in Canton’s Bi-district win over Crandall, adds to a productive offense. Pleasant Grove’s luck runs out against Canton.

Lake Worth (8-3) vs. Pilot Point (7-4): With a shocking upset over Emory Rains, Pilot Point gets revenge over Lake Worth , who won the meeting between the two teams by one point on Sept. 8.

Atlanta (5-6) vs. Brownsboro (8-3): Brownsboro totaled 302 rushing yards in its first-round win over Kaufman. Ricco Richards scored one of the Bears’ two special teams touchdowns. Brownsboro should get past Atlanta, who defeated a weak Gladewater team in the first round.

REGION III AREA PICKS:

La Vega (9-2) vs. Rusk (8-3): Brothers Kourtney and Chris Parr combined for five touchdowns in La Vega’s Bi-district win over Cameron Yoe. The tandem should lead La Vega over Rusk, which needed an overtime and Justin Sturns heroics to beat Madisonville last week.

West Orange-Stark (11-0) vs. Giddings (11-0): This matchup is a push. A pair of undefeated teams and high-scoring offenses should battle to the end. Orange-Stark is more balanced on offense with a dangerous playmaker in wide receiver Earl Thomas. But Giddings has the No. 1 playmaker in Class 3A with quarterback Brock Fitzhenry, who is fresh off a six-touchdown performance against Wharton in the first round. Fitzhenry propels Giddings over Orange-Stark with some late-game heroics.

Liberty Hill (8-2) vs. Crockett (7-4): Liberty Hill features an offense that is among the best in Class 3A, while Crockett is strong defensively with four shutouts this season. Running backs Doug Allman and Brent Bode lead Liberty Hill past Crockett.

Kirbyville (7-4) vs. Sweeny (9-2): Sweeny is currently on a nine-game winning streak and beat a tough La Grange team, 31-7, in the first round. Sweeny wins with defense and blanks Kirbyville to advance.

REGION IV AREA PICKS:

Wimberley (10-1) vs. Medina Valley (8-3): Quarterback Ricky Beatty is versatile and wins games for Wimberley. Medina Valley scored a big Bi-district win over Devine, but Wimberley proves too much for Medina Valley to handle.

Cuero (11-0) vs. Rio Hondo (10-1): Among the best Area-round matchups. Cuero has played consistent all season, and quarterback Kyle Noack will edge Rio Hondo and send Cuero to the Regional Semifinals.

Llano (7-4) vs. Hondo (11-0): Hondo has scored more than 60 points in four of its last six games, and the Owls rout Llano in a surprisingly one-sided game.

Orange Grove (10-1) vs. Port Isabel (9-2): Port Isabel features an efficient running game while riding a nine-game winning streak. Port Isabel continues its impressive season with a win over Orange Grove.

Stangs, don't feel lonely.

texasfootball.com

Beaumont Central (9-2) vs. La Marque (10-1): Central knocked off an unbeaten team last week, but doing the same to a one-loss team will be tough. However, La Marque will be missing QB Durklyn Haynes, enough to persuade us into an upset

Nederland (6-5) vs. Lamar Consolidated (11-0): Upset alert! This is the round Lamar Consolidated lost in last year -- and let us remind you Consolidated was also 11-0 at this point a year ago. With a go-to RB in Micah Mosley, Nederland won't go out quietly, but nevertheless, Lamar Consol will advance.

Beaumont West Brook (8-3) vs. FB Marshall (8-3): Heroics (a TD with under a minute remaining) propelled Marshall to the second round. This week, though, West Brook will eject Marshall from the playoffs.

Class 2A Bracket Breakdowns

11/16/2006

DIVISION I

All eyes on this bracket will focus on Region III, where three teams (Tatum, Jefferson and New Boston) who were at one time the top-ranked team in the state are located. But will beating up on each other cost a good team a chance at a title?

Below, we break down every team in this bracket ... speaking of, make sure to have it handy.

Region I

High Expectations ...

Littlefield (9-1) – Scored 396 total points this season, second most in Region I behind Comfort (451).

Early (8-2) – The Longhorns have played consistent for much of the season despite injuries here and there.

Comfort (9-1) – Offense is averaging 473.3 yards per game, led by dual-threat quarterback Luke Roberts.

If things go right ...

Muleshoe (8-2) – Quarterback Garrett Riley is dangerous and can lead the Mules to an upset.

Slaton (8-2) -- Won its first seven games but lost two of its final three.

Panhandle (8-2) -- Inconsistency defines the Panthers' season, but Panhandle can be a tough opponent.

Happy just to dance ...

Hawley (6-4) -- Lost three of its first four games, including one against Class 1A Rotan by 17 points.

Alpine (7-3) -- After being drilled by Ozona and Reagan Country during the regular season, the Fightin' Bucks have an uncomfortable first-round test in Comfort.

TexasFootball.com's pick: This region's final four packs some punch, but the winner between Early and Comfort will likely decide the regional champ. Give that to the latter team. After that win, Comfort will beat Littlefield to make the state semfinals.

Region II

High Expectations ...

Boyd (7-3) – It’s three losses have come against opponents who have a combined 26-4 record, and the Yellowjackets await an easy first-round matchup.

Farmersville (9-1) – Tailback Tajh Redwine can take Farmersville deep into the postseason.

De Kalb (9-1) – Team seemed to peek as regular season ended but faces tough road through brackets.

If things go right ...

Grandview (7-3) – Surprise team in Division I, currently riding a five-game winning streak.

Caddo Mills (8-2) – On the verge of being considered among the elite teams its region, but have not fared well against playoff competition, including a 31-point loss to Lone Oak.

Winnsboro (9-1) – Decent regular season and has a chance to make noise but likely falls to De Kalb in opening round.

Happy just to dance ...

Henrietta (5-5) – A preseason ranked team has the fewest wins of any team in Division I.

Callisburg (7-3) – Doomed with first-round matchup against Farmersville.

TexasFootball.com's pick: The second round will pit two 10-win teams against each other in Farmersville against Winnsboro, with Winnsboro advancing. That's where it ends. Boyd upsets Winnsboro to win the Region II crown.

Region III

High Expectations ...

New Boston (8-2) – Defeating Paul Pewitt in the final week of the season made up for a loss against Hughes Springs the week before. Matchup against Jefferson makes for a good first-round game.

Jefferson (9-1) – Held the No. 1 spot in the Class 2A state rankings for seven consecutive weeks.

Tatum (8-2) – Guaranteed to face one of two second-round teams who were ranked No. 1 for at least one week during the regular season.

Marlin (8-2) – Good team that definitely makes the Regional Finals in any other region.

Newton (7-2) – Strong chance at repeating as state champs and among the most consistent Class 2A teams all season.

If things go right ...

Malakoff (7-2-1) – Squeezed between some of the best teams in the state after losing two of its last three games.

Happy just to dance ...

McGregor (7-3) – First-round tune-up team for Marlin’s balanced offensive attack.

Buna (7-3) – The Cougars faded in the final weeks of the regular season.

TexasFootball.com's pick: An unbelievable region with five of the eight teams holding Top 10 ranks at one point during the season. Newton and Marlin will battle each other to advance to the finals against Tatum, who knocks off new Boston. Tatum beats Newton to become the last Region III team standing.

Region IV

High Expectations ...

Rice Consol. (8-2) – Quarterback Taylor Cook and tailback Zacchaeus Foster have combined for more than 3,000 yards this season. The Raiders benefit from a drop in class.

Cotulla (8-1) – The Cowboys posted an undefeated record until the final game of the season when it lost the district title to Dilley.

If things go right ...

Salado (7-3) – The offense needs to score more points to compliment a talented defensive squad.

Boling (7-2) – Defense will need to go right after allowing more than 34 points per game against playoff opponents.

Navarro (8-2) – Good team who has played strong against tough opponents. A first-round win over Cotulla is not unlikely.

Hebbronville (7-2) – The Longhorns are currently enjoying a six-game winning streak.

George West (8-2) – Offense has struggled a bit lately.

Hearne (6-4) – Hearne has a chance at making the second round, and a win over Hempstead in the regular season proves it might be capable of going farther.

TexasFootball.com's pick: A preseason Top 10 team, Rice Consolidated had a late-season slide that created doubt. Enough so that we see Gerronimo Navarro upsetting Altair Rice to make the state semifinals.

DIVISION I PREDICTIONS:

Continuing to ride QB Luke Roberts, Comfort will beat Boyd to reach the state finals.

On the other side, Tatum will roll over Navarro for a chance at a second-straight title. And they won't be denied.

Tatum will beat Comfort to pick up a second straight state championship trophy.

DIVISION II

The No. 1 team in the state (Mart) is playing for the Division II title. But with six other Top 10 teams, there's plenty of drama in store for this state title.

Below, we break down every team in this bracket ... speaking of, make sure to have it handy.

Region I

High Expectations ...

Childress (8-1) – One-loss team has perhaps the easiest road to the regional finals.

Friona (9-1) – Allowed only 21 points in final eight games of the season.

Wall (8-2) – Lost its two games by a combined four points.

Blanco (9-1) – Strong defense and manageable offense has the Panthers primed for postseason run.

Idalou (9-1) – The Wildcats quietly posted a nine-win season and scored more than 30 points in six of their last seven contests.

Haskell (10-0) – Undefeated season received little attention because of weak opponents, but the expectations are always high for no-loss teams.

If things go right ...

Stratford (7-3) – The Class 1A defending champs may be outclassed, but Stratford is a proven playoff team.

Canadian (7-3) – Tough spot with Friona in first round but could be primed for an upset.

Coleman (7-3) – The Bluecats have played every game close this season, including a double-overtime loss to Early.

Ozona (8-2) – Riding a seven-game winning streak and scored more than 40 points in its last three games.

Sonora (8-2) – Won its first eight games but got drilled in its final two.

Anson (7-3) – The Tigers over achieved this season and should not be taken lightly.

Happy just to dance ...

Tulia (6-4) – All four games against playoff teams translated to four losses.

Lubbock Roosevelt (5-5) – Losing to Shallowater proves they will be major underdogs in the postseason.

Shallowater (6-4) – The Mustangs suffered a breakdown earlier in the season against Idalou.

Reagan County (5-5) – Luck runs out after playing in a weak district.

TexasFootball.com's pick: It may be the weakest (top to bottom) region in Division II, but there are still several good teams. The best will be Childress, which beats Blanco to earn a trip back to the state semifinals.

Region II

High Expectations ...

Cisco (9-1) – Proved it belonged in the top-tier of Class 2A teams after winning nine game and pulling off an upset against Paradise.

Lone Oak (9-1) – High regards at the start of the season, and the expectations continue for the Buffaloes as it adds to a District 12-2A title.

Whitewright (8-2) – Back-and-forth regular season, but the Tigers should cruise through the first two rounds.

Paradise (9-1) – Losing the District 10-2A title to Cisco should not diminish the Panthers’ threat in the area.

Clarksville (8-2) – Defense is allowing less than 17 points per game while the offense is averaging more than 30 points.

If things go right ...

Holliday (9-1) – District champs after failing to make the playoffs last season. Defense yield only 10.2 points per contest, and the only loss was to 1A No. 1 Windthorst.

Quitman (9-1) – Only loss came against a strong Winnsboro team but likely will fall to Whitewright in second round.

Olney (8-2) – Defense is their strong point, as they allowed the fewest point in the region.

Melissa (7-3) – Quarterback Zach Williams has passed for more than 1,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,000 and could overtake a top-tier team.

Gunter (8-2) – Not a top-tier team but potential remains after winning eight games.

Itasca (8-2) – Among the biggest surprise teams in Class 2A after failing to win a district game last season.

Happy just to dance ...

Hawkins (4-6) – Allowed more points than it scored.

Honey Grove (6-4) – Edged Prairiland for final playoff spot in District 15-2A.

Hico (4-6) – Three district wins came against teams with a combined 3-10 district record.

Aubrey (6-4) – Getting past Whitewright in first round is a reach, but there's a good tailback in Austin Griffin.

Edgewood (4-6) – Defense is among the worst in this region's playoff teams.

TexasFootball.com's pick: Cisco edges Whitewright, and Paradise does the same to Gunter to set up a rematch with between the district rivals. The result doesn’t change as Cisco gets its second win over Paradise.

Region III

High Expectations ...

Paul Pewitt (9-1) – Perfect regular season was upended by New Boston in the final week of the season. Still, the Brahmas have a good shot at returning to state finals.

East Chambers (10-0) – Quarterback Tramain Thomas has both thrown and rushed for over 1,000 yards.

Crawford (9-1) – The Pirates luckily missed out on Division I and a possible rematch with Newton, who ended Crawford’s season in the state semifinals last year. Crawford has scored nearly triple the amount of points it has allowed.

Troup (9-1) – Big win over rival Tatum shows the Tigers could be in for a long playoff run.

Mart (9-1) – Scored 385 points while only allowing 98 – enough said.

Harleton (9-1) – Undefeated in District 18-2A and defeated Jefferson for the district title.

Hamilton (9-1) – Only loss came against Crawford. The Bulldogs feature the second-highest scoring offense in Class 2A.

If things go right ...

Kerens (8-2) – Again dominated a weak district but could make noise with a first-round upset over Troup.

Mildred (8-2) – Weak defense but played strong against tough teams.

Corrigan-Camden (9-1) – Scored the most and allowed the fewest points in District 23-2A, but rendered title to Newton.

Hooks (8-2) – Tough schedule possibly prepared Hornets for playoff run.

Elysian Fields (7-3) – Handing Troup its only loss of the season shows potential.

Deweyville (8-2) – Highest scoring offense in Class 2A.

Happy just to dance ...

Big Sandy (6-4) – Vulnerable defense is exploited by Paul Pewitt in first round.

Hemphill (6-4) – Scoring less than 20 points per game is not suitable for postseason.

Teague (7-3) – Decent season finishing behind Mart and Marlin but doomed with first-round matchup against Crawford.

TexasFootball.com's pick: This region is as thick with talent as any. It's possible in the second round we'll get eight teams with a combined nine losses. So who escapes? None other than the No. 1 team. Mart will beat Paul Pewitt to advance out of Region III.

Region IV

High Expectations ...

Lexington (8-2) – Quarterback Chase McCravey is among the best athletes in Class 2A, but the Eagles’ postseason run could end early with second-round matchup against Schulenburg.

East Bernard (9-0) – Tailback Derrick Wilson is averaging 12.0 yards per carry while totaling 1,335 yards this season.

Schulenburg (10-0) – Began the regular season ranked No. 20 and finished at No. 2.

Refugio (9-1) – Solid team with high-scoring offense and stingy defense.

If things go right ...

Dilley (9-1) – Big win over Cotulla to claim District 30-2A title, but the Wolves might lack enough offense for considerable playoff run.

Rogers (8-2) – Quarterback Ricky Brenek and tailback R.J. Ledford revived program that won only three games last season.

Industrial (7-3) – The Cobras didn’t have a strong regular season last year but advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Stockdale (7-3) – Surprising 7-win season could fuel drive through first two rounds.

Freer (8-2) – Potential to advance to area semifinals after scoring 327 total points and allowing just 134.

Happy just to dance ...

Jarrell (6-4) – Quarterback Kaleb Cox is only bright spot.

Somerville (6-3) – Stole playoff birth from Hempstead.

Wallis Brazos (6-3) – Six wins earned one postseason game against Schulenburg.

Randolph (6-4) – Decent defense but has a tough road ahead.

SA Cole (6-3) – Hard to judge if defense is for real.

Taft (6-4) – Lack of production on offense could lead to an early exit, but the Hounds shouldn't immediately be counted out.

Bishop (4-6) – Fewest wins of all Class 2A playoff teams.

TexasFootball.com's pick: The Region IV champ might be decided in the second-round matchup between Schulenburg and Lexington. That goes to the latter team, as Lexington advances and moves past Refugio in the state semifinals.

DIVISION II PREDICTIONS:

Cisco's improbable run from not getting picked to make the postseason to making the state semifinals will end there. Back in the semifinals, Childress will beat Cisco to make the finals.

On the other side, Mart will beat Lexington for the second time this season. Mart then will hold off Childress to win the DII title.
