I'm an idiot, a move to 29-3A would put LM into region 4...didn't give it thought before I posted. Well that would make for interesting region 4. I'll have to go look at the successful 3A teams in that rebion...I'm thinking off bat Cuero and maybe Giddings, Gonzales is undefeated this year. CC-Miller is one as well.

I look at this way, unless something drastically happens over there at LaMarque to stop the drop in enrollment, 3A will not have to worry about them for very long.  ;) In four years time, LaMarque has dropped from 1200 to now 741. At that rate they will only be 3A for just these next two years, then down to 2A.

I also believe that with this dramatic drop in enrollment, the talent level will drop as well.

LaMarque has some bigger issues over there that has nothing to do with sports. School district is rated unacceptable and seems to be a lot of internal problems as well.

Losing almost 500 students (just over a third of the enrollment) in just 4-5 years, is very alarming and that is not a good thing, even though it drops them in classification.

My old college buddy teaches there and said since he has been there, over 300 kids have transferred from La Marque to private schools, Texas City and other South Houston schools. The average GPA is 2.5 on 4.0 scale. Drop out rate is higher than any school in the Houston Area. Some of their best teachers have also either retired or transferred as well. Wild!

Question... If they are dropped to 3A cant they opt. to stay in 4A?
no its goes strictly by enrollment
Wrong. A school can always opt to stay up in classification. Many schools (several HISD) have been doing this for many years. An El Paso area school has had 3A numbers for 12 years, and they have opted to stay 5A due to travel.

LaMarque might be a little hard to deal w/ on that level!  Right now they have 34 killers suiting up every Friday against 55-70 opponents across the field.  In a very, very tough District.
i think you might be suprised at the 3a talent out there just in this area cold spring would be a tough game even for the best 4a schools although I will admit lm is coming out of maybe the toughest district in texas so week in and week out there competion level as a whole would drop. Lm made the playoffs for the first time in like 3 years last year and made the most of it but they are not going to be the powerhouse they usef to be in 4a with the enrollment numbers going down so far.

For example:

District 22-4A

Houston Wheatley    1,101
Houston Worthing      1,013
Houston Washington    946
Houston Furr              865
Houston Scarborough  733
Houston Jones            686
Houston Kashmere      596

5 of those schools have 3A numbers and have had 3A numbers for several years but have opted to stay 4A for the past several years.

Wow looking through dc and kashmere and jones are the 2 smallest 4a schools in the state wonder why they stay 4a
Because it keeps them in a local HISD district. Otherwise they would have to travel way out side Houston to be in a 3A district.

If LaMarque decided to stay 4A, would they be able to drop back to 3A in the next realignment if they chose to?  :-\
When you opt to stay up a classification, it's only for that particular realignment (2 years). When the next realignment comes (2014) if LaMarque were to still have 3A numbers, they can still opt to stay up or go down where their enrollment puts them.
Thanks... That will be interesting to see. If they chose to stay 4A. And they don't play so well in 4A. If they chose to drop in the next realignment to 3A to better their chances of another state run.

Actually guys, lamarque had the opportunity to drop at last alignment according to one of their coaches, but decided to stay in 4a due to travel. He told me that there is enough 3a number schools in Houston to make a 3a district now. And secondly, what do we have to do to get away from those guys....geez...lol.

Wrong. Their enrollment for last realignment was 996, cut off was 990.

Like I said, LaMarque will probably have to go Region IV if they decide to go down to 3A, unless those 5-6 HISD schools finally decide to drop down to 3A.

    • Like I said, even if it’s only 10% of the 100 kids BHISD takes from GCCISD each year, that’s 10 athletes per year and that’s being generous.  You’re right about the jobs with BHISD, BTW.  There’s more than 1 athlete from Baytown originally who got transferred to BHISD after a job opened up for Mama.

    • It’s behind a paywall but here’s Baytown Sun’s story on it.  It was reported on in other papers statewide so if you search by the date I think you’ll find other stories on it. UIL strengthens student transfer rules By Ron McDowell [email protected] Oct 18, 2024   In order to maintain a level playing field for all member schools, the University Interscholastic League strengthened rules regarding transfer student eligibility at its most recent meeting in Austin. Every year thousands of students transfer schools in the state of Texas. A student’s ability to participate in UIL sanctioned activities may be limited base on the reasons for the transfer. A change in family status, work transfers, enrollment in an academic magnet program, or a move across town, receive scrutiny, but only rarely does one of these reasons result in the loss of eligibility. The only reason to automatically cause the loss of participation eligibility is a transfer for athletic purposes. The current rule, which has been in place since 1981, does not require a Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPFs) to be submitted if the student-athlete does not participate in a varsity level sport during the first year of enrollment. There has been growing concern among some member schools, that other members are breaking the current rule and creating “super teams” with new transfer enrollees, and that the UIL is not doing enough to police, what appear to be, the inordinate number of transfers among high school athletes. To mitigate these concerns, the UIL approved a proposal to expand the power of the State Executive Committee (SEC) and allow it to investigate schools based upon the number of PAPFs submitted. Schools that submit an inordinate number of PAPFs would face heightened scrutiny and possible public reprimand and future sanctions. The UIL has also changed the requirements for PAPF submission, mandating that the form be submitted before a grade 9-12 transfer student may participate at any level of school athletics. This is a marked departure from the current policy which encourages schools not to complete PAPFs for students who transfer in, if the school believes that the student will not play a varsity sport in the first year the student is enrolled at the new school. Some critics of the current system think that the change doesn’t go far enough. Speaking on background, one local school district source suggested that there should be an automatic year wait for transfer students due to the number of loopholes in the waiver process. “If a student transfers, it should be a year out of competition automatically,” the source said. In addition, the UIL also approved a proposal that gives the SEC the power to appoint an independent administrator to oversee the conduct of the local District Executive Committee (DEC) if it is determined that the DEC is not consistently enforcing the rules of the governing body. The change is significant since all appeals that a school brings, starts and usually ends with the DEC. That includes the determination of transfer student eligibility. It is believed that with the implementation of this change, schools in a UIL district will be less likely to face retribution from the DEC chair and other members. • I was hoping WOS was going to win. To get another chance to redeem ourself. Silsbee did not look good in that game and has not played consistent during the season. Hopefully against La Vega they will play 4quarters of football
