Silsbee vs HJ has been the PREMIER match up in SETX for the past 7 years. Before then I would say it was Kountze vs HJ, Ozen vs Central, Silsbee vs PA Lincoln, West Brook vs Central. The only schools with a huge fan base to make noise over the past few years has been Silsbee, HJ, and Koutntze. Evadable and Spurger have done well but don't see too many of their fans on here. If you have never been to a Silsbee vs HJ home and home game, I'd advise you to do so. I really enjoy the fans and the clean game both teams play. Over the last few years I think both teams have combined to have 5 All State Players (Stallworth, Jones, Robinson,Donahoe, and Prudhomme), 2 of the states best coaches, and the largest crowds in SETX. Nuffield said!

Might want to add Jarvis Benard from HJ to that list!!!

Also Nederland has tons of fans on here the last few years
Well, we've actually had something to talk about ever since English took over the program five/six years ago. It all turned around about 9 years ago when he and a few others started a little dribblers program in Nederland. As long as he is our head coach, we will continue to be competitive, and that will keep us active on this board. As I've said before, I don't expect Nederland to win district this season (as I expected them to win last year), but it will not surprise me if they win district again. With their 7th, 8th, 9th, JV, and Varsity teams all winning district last year, I expect Nederland will be very competitive for years to come...

HonestAbe, can't agree with you more about Brian English. I believe my Pirates would still be a force if he would have stayed. I still get sick at my stomach.....as long as he's in Nederland, you will be a power in basketball. Best coach in the area and a great man. We miss him terribly. I honestly believe he could coach at the next level; perhaps Lamar should give him a chance given the clowns they've been through in the last couple of decades.

a good
I don't know if that is necessarily the case.  A Coach who takes very poor talent and gets the best possible results could definately be better than a good coach taking a talented team all the way.  Not stating a case for anyone but hardware isn't always the best measurement.

I would agree ST413.........are you implying that Nederland does not have any talent?? If so, you are sadly mistaken!!!  They have been very talented for the last 4-5 years!!!
No not at all,  they have been good recently.

Ok, Lazeek, then who are the best coaches in the area? Is that really how you judge who the best coaches are? Are John Stockton, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, and Charles Barkley not some of the best NBA players to have ever played the game? None of these players ever won a championship. Based on hardware, HJ coach has a state title and who else?
Here are a few arguments which Coach English has accomplished which make him one of the best coaches in the area:

5 time coach of the year in district 20-4A (2 at Vidor, 3 at Nederland)
2 District Championships at Nederland (Last district championship was in 1955)
2 trips to the playoffs at Vidor-something that has never happened in Vidor history (vidor never even had a winning season above .500 until he arrived) and has not happened since he left.
3 Playoff trips at Nederland ( last was 1992, and before that was in 1955)
1 Regional appearance in 4A last season

What other coaches around here have turned 2 programs completely around like he has in the past 10 years?

I know, I know, HJ has way more playoff appearances and a few state championships. HJ has a strong history of excellence in Basketball.

The statement made by Robanadana was that he is one of the best coaches in the area. If he's not, then who are the best-in your opinion? Who has the hardware that meets your requirements?

Okay Dove, then who are the top dogs in your opinion?
Active, inactive, etc?

I don't know much about the high school coaches in this area but I think there should be specific parameters such as longevity being one. I would certainly list the HJ coach, Kountze, PAM, hmmm?

Just curious what he has accomplished? Where did he coach before? Not familiar with him, please share his credentials. He came from Silsbee, right?

Oh! I'm sure we'll get plenty of information from AAW!  :)
He IS Mr. Silsbee!
Wonder if he has ever considered running for mayor there?
He would get my vote!  8)

I think most would agree that these are all good coaches, but what makes one better than the next? Silsbee, HJ, and Kountze have all been good at basketball for 20 years plus, right? How long have these coaches been the HC at these schools?

My argument is that English went in to Vidor and won! No disrespect, but Vidor (nor Nederland, PNG, LCM, BC, etc.) has never been considered a basketball powerhouse, and Vidor has not been good since he left. Not sure of any other coaches in the area who have turned around not just one, but two programs like he did. I'm not saying he is THE best, b/c there is no true way to compare coaches to say one is better than the next. However, I do believe he is amongst the top coaches in the area without a doubt!
