"In seven of his years as head coach, Van Meter’s teams lost to the eventual state champion. Those included teams from Bay City, Lamar Consolidated, La Marque and Lake Travis.

On two other occasions, Van Meter-coached teams lost to the state finalist (West Orange-Stark and Nederland)."  ???

Nederland beat Friendswood in 2001 i wanna say at rice in the quarterfinals. Friendswood came in highly ranked and just couldnt stop the run.

Nederland wasn't a state finalist that year. Nederland lost 7-6 to Bay City (the eventual state champion) in the state semifinal. The last time the Bulldogs played in a state championship was 1961.

Seems like he sees that the talent pool at Friendswood was a little shabby and wanted to get away while he was still a high commodity.  Pretty smart move.  He wants to avoid consecutive subpar seasons, so he'll take just one.

That or he knows Friendswood is about to go 5A and get a serious wake-up call in more than just football.
