PORT ARTHUR —

BEAUMONT — Lamar University’s basketball team added one player and subtracted one during its semester break.

The new face at Cardinals basketball practice will be Brennan Doty, a former basketball/football star at Port Neches-Groves. Doty, is transferring to Lamar, after spending the fall semester as a preferred walk-on quarterback with the University of Oregon’s Rose Bowl champions.

Leaving the Cardinals program is backup point guard Tre Lynch, who is academically ineligibile to continue playing. Lynch, a 6-0 sophomore point guard from Lancaster, was averaging 3.5 point and 1.1 assists. He had participated in all 18 games this season, had started once and was averaging 12.1 minutes of playing time.

As a freshman, Lynch played in 10 games and averaged 1.3 points. He had been a 4A All-State player as a senior at Lancaster.

The 6-3 Doty, meanwhile, is joining the Cardinals as a walk-on. He was the offensive player of the year in District 20-4A last season, after averaging 19 points and six rebounds, and leading PN-G to its first playoff berth since 1989.

He was also the main man for the Indians football team, leading them to the playoffs both his junior and senior seasons. He was selected the Most Valubable Player on the Port Arthur News 2010 Super Team.

“Brennan came by practice last week, visited with us and told us he’d like to transfer to Lamar and join the basketball team as a walk-on,” said Cardinal coach Pat Knight. “We did some checking, got some excellent reports and told him he’d be welcome.” -- Bob West
