Racing suit worn by late Earnhardt Sr. stolen in Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas -- A racing suit that was worn by the late NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Sr. and is worth as much as $100,000 has been stolen from Texas Motor Speedway, police said.

"No amount of money, nothing, can replace this," Eddie Gossage, the speedway president, said Wednesday. "Hopefully their investigation will find it and it will be returned."

The suit, along with a helmet, racing gloves and shoes, is normally displayed on a mannequin in a glass case at the race track's gift shop. This year, the track used the items to recreate a famous photo of Earnhardt taken after he won at the speedway in 2000.

The display was taken down and the items boxed up earlier this month. When speedway workers went to set up the Earnhardt memorabilia two weeks ago back in the gift shop, they discovered the items were missing, Gossage said.

Earnhardt, arguably the most famous driver in NASCAR history, gave the items to Gossage about 11 years ago as a gift. Earnhardt died in a crash at the 2001 Daytona 500.
