Honest Abe Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 The term 'talent' has been discussed in many different aspects on this forum. One's perception of talent seems to be different than the next guy's opinion. What are the top 5 (or more) qualities, in your opinion, that makes a High School kid 'talented'? There are plenty more, I know, but this should get it started: (Does not have to be in order)1. Basketball IQ2. Athleticism*3. Diversified Scoring Ability (inside, outside, SMRJ, FTs)4. Defensive Effeciency (Steals, Blocked Shots, defensive pressure)5. Ball Control (Low TO/steal ratio; dribbling/passing)There are plenty others, I know.

Please add to it. :)We don't know what talent looks like (in Nederland) ::) - so we want to know!
stevenash Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Looks like pretty decent criteria to me.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 You can have all the IQ , but don't mean anything if you too scared to use it. It's Nederland, I will grant this exception. ;D

Basketball IQ and Athleticism are very general where as 3, 4, and 5 are more specific. Scoring ability and ball control are factors that make up the equation of IQ, and your defensive abilities and efficiency (correctly spelled) fall more under the category of athleticism.I don't think it is an argument that Basketball IQ would be taken over athleticism any day of the week. You can make yourself stronger, quicker, and more agile, we all have seen it done. But, your basketball IQ isn't something that will change much over time, no matter how many drills you go through in practice.

Of course, if you are scared or intimidated, then the basketball IQ is maybe not what it could/should be
lamar73! Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 How about Leadership Qualities and Work Ethic? I have seen talent become a cancer and tear a team apart.

mytwocents-28 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Big example is work ethic. I know someone already said this but, IMO, its probably the most important trait. I would take someone who has about 55% free throw and an average of 10 points a game who is in the gym every day working harder than anyone over someone who is averaging 20 points a game who shows up late to practice and has a bad attitude.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Give me guys with heart and I'll kick your butt or die trying ;)

bullets13 Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 here's one that i haven't seen mentioned... coachability... these days this is a quality that many players don't have, but it plays a huge rule in the development of talent in HS players, especially if the coach is a good one.
catfever Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Many times teams with a lot of heart can beat teams that are more athletic. That is why there is a tie in 21-3A for 3rd place.
CThoops Posted February 16, 2012 Report Posted February 16, 2012 Basketball IQ and the skills to go with make a player talented, but the reason some teams are just plain better than others is the fact that their players were more physically gifted.. (Height, wingspan, body size)..The root of talent in basketball is work ethic and practice.. And the kids that want to put the time in to be better, will be better

They are all males, they are all 6'2" or slightly over and they all have heart. Start them against HJ or Silsbee - in my opinion, it'll be "die trying."
