Is strength of schedule a major contributor to the success of a high school basketball team? If so, what determines whether or not a team has played a strong schedule?
I am sure that a strong schedule helps to some degree but I dont consider it to be the ultimate determinant of a teams success.  There are lots of different ways to achieve a good end result.  I have been told by a reliable source that LeBron James does yoga exclusively and does not lift weights.  Conventional wisdom suggests that weight lifting is crucial to being a top competitor.  If what I have been told is accurate, Mr. James would be tangible evidence that alternatives work also.

Not always, but it is never good to play ALL down in the pre-season...It gives your team a false sense of who they are...Some would call it confidence, but I have always believed that in order to be the best, you should play the best possible teams available...Scheduling is not always easy for good programs, however, due to the fact, no one wants to play you if they don't have to! I think you should have a balance as well when scheduling pre season games...you don't want to make your guys lose confidence by playing UP so much either...You should play games that your kids can get something out of...For example if I were a 3A program, I would find at least 1 majority 4A/5A tournament, just for the experience...The other two, I would just find good solid tournaments, regardless of classification...Being in SE Texas, you are kind of limited in pre season match ups, unless you are willing to travel for single games...If you can travel, do it, but I think there is enough competition in the area to have a decent pre district schedule that will test your team. Sometimes you can get the best work out of your team in pre season, by simply focusing on what YOU do...and concentrate on improving.

I think your last couple of sentences make a lot of sense.  I have been taught that there are many ways to skin a cat and you are most vulnerable to relative failure when you are too hard headed to accept that as a possibility.  I would use Mr. Boeheims "zone approach" as another example that there are exceptions to every "rule".  Additionally, when discussing strength of schedule, a lot of that will become a matter of perception.

In the end the only schedule that matters is the one in the playoffs and how you do there!  By that time of the year everyone has played someone that is good enough to challenge them.

HJ hasn't played a Houston team in a while and the do well in the playoffs every year. Silsbee always plays a few during the year and also does well in the playoffs. I guest it doesn't matter. I wish both teams luck tonight!

You must play teams from houston or you will never win.  If you do win in the playoffs it won't matter because you didn't play anyone from houston.

" Talent" is a relative term.  If comparative scores will be a determining criteria, this might interest you.  HJ (weak perceived schedule) had a 5 point larger average margin of victory in district competition than did Silsbee (strong perceived schedule).
Most would agree that Silsbee plays the toughest schedule around here every year. Can someone post their accomplishments? I know HJ has 3 State Championships to Silsbee O....Think i would do whatever it is HJ and staff are doing. Don't think you getfor a ringu just because your opponents were tougher. Also, if Silsbee will play any team any where,  then why No game 3, and why did theyshe run from Sealy??

Not sure I understand your theory of "running from Sealy" when Silsbee will be playing a team that swept Sealy in district by an average of 18 points. ::)

BTW, I don't agree that Silsbee plays the toughest schedule around here every year.

The team that plays the toughest schedule in this area is clearly Legacy Christian.
I would also point out that HJ has been to the Regional Tourney in Hunstville 5 years in a row (at least) with a record in said Tourney of 6 - 3.  Silsbee runs a close 2nd in this feat having a record in Hunstville (4 trips in 5 years) of 5 - 2.

That's pretty good stats coming out of 1 little district.... a combined record of 11 - 5 in the last 5 years!

Just did a quick check ( not a complete one) and Hj has played 5 teams that are still in the playoffs and3 of them are 4-a schools and it would have been 4 if Jacksonville had not lost to Lancaster in triple overtime playoff game.  Either HJ schedule is not as bad as portrayed or playoffs are full of "patsy" teams.
