HOUSTON—The University of Houston baseball team used seven hits, seven walks and one hit-by-pitch to win a 2-1 thriller in the bottom of the ninth over a competitive Texas State team at Cougar Field on Friday evening.

Houston improved to 4-1 on the year, while the Bobcats fell to 2-3. With the win, the Cougars snapped a six-game skid vs. Texas State as their last win came back on April 9, 2008 in a 15-9 win. The last home win for UH vs. the Bobcats came Feb. 28, 2008 in an 8-1 victory.

The Cougars rode the arm of starting pitcher Jared Ray (7.0,2,1,1,4,7) for seven innings as the senior pitched a gem, allowing just two hits, one run, four walks, while fanning seven for the no-decision.

Down 1-0 on a Bobcat homerun off the bat of Casey Kalenkosky in the fourth inning, Houston struggled to answer Texas State starter Colton Turner, who fanned 12 Cougar batters in his outing.

Ray was eventually relieved by senior Jordan Mannisto (2.0,0,0,0,1,0) in the eighth inning as the righty tossed two shutout innings, allowing just one walk for his first win of the season.

Houston posted seven hits during the evening contest, three of which came off the bat of senior infielder Jake Runte. The local product finished 3-for-4 with a double, which drove in the Cougars first run of the game to tie the score in the seventh.

Also solid at the plate was sophomore leadoff hitter Landon Appling in a 2-for-3 effort with two walks and scoring both of Houston’s runs in the win. Picking up a base knock was junior Casey Grayson (1x4) and junior Chase Jensen (1x3), while junior Jacob Lueneburg earned an RBI on the game-winner with a hit-by-pitch.

Texas State reliever Ross Goebel (0.1,0,1,1,2,0) suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.

Houston stranded two runners in four innings, but it was three walks in the final frame by Texas State relievers that put Houston in a spot for its third come-from-behind victory of 2012.
