yepyep Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012
Okay, here are my two cents. For those of you that don't know, I am, well, I WAS a player as of last friday at around ten o'clock. I have played HJ basketball for 4 years now, and I can honestly say that in all my four years, I have never seen a team as disciplined as LaVega. They were in a lot of ways like Nederland except far more athletic. They did nothing dumb or flashy, they just played solid, fundamental basketball.Players from LaVega were where they were supposed to be at all times. When we went up one with forty seconds left and tried to make the pass up the court to get it across and stall, the LaVega players knew they needed to get the ball. They knew who our go-to guy was Prudhomme, so they stuck to him like glue. No timeout was needed to tell their players where to be.The defense they played was awesome. Not perfect, but awesome. They started out soft and let you get the ball up the court for the first part of the game, then around the third quarter, they started a little half-court trap defense, then once crunch time came around, there was full-court pressure! HJ knew how to beat it and had prepared for it, but Friday night, after getting ready to take the floor because Athens was shooting free-throws to win it basically, and then having to wait through TWO overtime periods did something to both teams that night, I can promise you that.LaVega was a [s]good[/s] great team. Their will to win was just like that of HJ's. They were not unbeatable, and anyone who watched Friday night could have told you that. HJ, I dare to say, COULD have one that game, but I don't think SHOULD have one the game. Were we capable of winning that game? NO DOUBT!!!!! But capability, probability, and actuality are three totally different things that can be extremely painful when they all don't agree. Now for the most important part of my post. LaVega's basketball team (not it's fans, because I am hearing differently of them, although I'm not positive about them) was the classiest group of young men I have seen in a LONG time (aside from HJ of course). They were extremely happy that they one that game, but when we went to shake their hands, there was not an ounce of sneering or disrespect coming from them. All they had were positive things to say about us and I think that is the most important aspect of High-School athletics. After the game when we were waiting on the bus to come pick us up at the back of the Coliseum, they came out AGAIN and shook all of our hands, congratulating us on a great season and complimenting all of us. They were extremely well-mannered, and if I HAD to lose to anyone, I'm glad it was them.
Excellent post. I have no ties whatsoever to Hardin-Jefferson, but its hard not to root for a team/school/community that has young men like this representing them. Congrats on a great season and good luck in your future.
BLUEDOVE3 Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 That has a lot to do with coaching. Instilling that [s]board [/s].... err discipline in them
Dick Vitale Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 Dove, I don't think they know much about the "board of education" around those parts! :D ;)

Probably went over some people's head with that comment.
shorttexas1 Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 Silsbee posters hove moved on to next year while this thread is still growing. Let it go, great run, but you fell short.

ST413 Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 And in that same time period half our more of the posts on this thread have absolutely nothing to do with the hj/LaVega game.

It's clear that you two are socially, intellectually, and morally superior to the entire remainder of the members. Don't know how you stand it. ::)
BLUEDOVE3 Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 Maybe LV ran more laps or miles in the off-season than Silsbee or HJ AND mixed their schedule with weak and competitive teams ;D
stevenash Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 Or possibly they simply won 2 close games.

Out in the country the board of education is not talked about in the past tense. Maybe thats why certain schools have to continuously explain to their discipline procedures to the UIL.

stevenash Posted March 7, 2012 Report Posted March 7, 2012 For sure. If you won 2 close games, there is no evidence that you didn't win 2 close games.

cbosha Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 I am thinking that it is Person. I am not sure though. I think that he is saying that people are making all sorts of comments about what they shoulda, coulda done, but the fact of the matter is that the kids were the ones on the court. We don't realize how good Lavega really is because we did not play them. It is easy to sit on the sidelines and say what you wouldve done in a particular situation. It is different when you are actually playing the game. I have a lot of respect for him. He actually put the game in perspective.
