Trotlining

Recommended Posts

A lot of fishing talk on here but not any about my favorite kind.......trot lining.  Anyone else out there that catfishes?  I'm getting geared up for spring break, will be setting lines out soon.  Last year I mainly used cut bait (buffalo) and I slated the bluecats but ops won't bite cut bait. The yellow mudcat are hard to find anymore for bait but will concentrate on perch for the ops.

Just wanting some catfish talk.

Lots of good cats are caught up the Angelina River just North of the Neches/Angelina split on drop lines in about 25 feet. Further south on the cuts between the Neches and Steinhagen, trotlines running parallel with the banks are real good using shad in about 8'. We caught a freezer full last year of an avg. size of 2-3 lbs. The cool thing was we could bait up early(5 a.m.) and then bass fish til noon and then run our lines. We averaged 10-15 a day over a two week period. Also caught some descent white perch in the process.

When I was fishing for Ops I would always use perch/bream/bluegills. The channel and blue cats will eat almost anything from Zote soap, liver, shrimp, stink bait, cut bait, weiners, etc.

I always caught most of my ops up against the banks with individual limb lines and not with trotlines.

I try to throw a line or two out every other week or so, depending on how busy I am.  I usually use goldfish or perch for bait.  Where do you usually go?

I fish in the Neches river below the Hwy 96 Bridge between Evadale and Silsbee.  Mostly where the Village creek empties into the Neches near Vidor.

I 've always tried to fish mine perpendicular to the banks.  Tie one end off at the bank and another off on a snag in the water.  I'm excited about this year.  Wish I could get me some yellow mudcats for bait.

Up in the cuts we run them parallel where there is a slight bend. Now on the lakes, we come straight off the bank and tie a weight to the other end and let it sink. Usually a coffe can filled with concrete with an eyebolt in the middle. Last Jan. before rayburn got scary low, alot of people were doing good using noodles early in shallow water, I haven't tried the noodle thing yet.

Go below the Richland Chamber's damn into the Trinity River and set limb lines when the river is high or on the rise.  LOTS of big yellow cats and big blues.  The very best bait for big yellows is a live bass that is about 10-12 inches long.  Not that Smokin baby would EVER use a bass for bait, but yep a birdy told me they are EXCELLENT bait.

In Texas that would be some expensive bait if caught by the game warden.......

As long as they are Kentucky bass, then it is ok. They don't have a size limit.

My hubby got all of his trot lines out this past week and got everything ready.  He is going up the lake this weekend after the marathon to spend Spring Break with the guys fishing and doing 12 ounce curls.  He is going to live the high life and do little to nothing cept fish.

;D ;D ;D ;D  His friend did tell me if I wanted to drive up during the week to stay a few days I was more than welcome.  I told him hell no I was not going up there to be the cook or maid plus I had to work.  Let them have their fun while I go shopping and have dinner and drinks with friends here.
