Article says he is a likely late 2nd round pick or free agent.  2nd round money isn't guaranteed either.  I hope it works out well for him.  Personally, I think he should go higher than late 2nd.  He can play.

But so can the others who are anticipated to be taken before him

Smart money says go back, play his senior season, maybe his draft stock goes up, but if it does not, he has his college degree...win-win....then he can take care of his daughter even if he goes undrafted...just my opinion.

I am not shocked by this decision.  In my opinion not smart at all.  A degree from the University of Texas and another year of improving and playing in the spotlight is the way he should have gone.  I hope he makes it for his families sake but I am afraid this wasn't the right decision. Time will tell.  Good luck J'Covan!

First of all I want to wish him the very best. I also think another year would've helped him though. On this team Brown played more like a SG than PG. At his height it would be very hard for him to be a shoot first PG. The projections are 2nd Rd or FA. If this happens of course there's no money guaranteed and he might end up in Europe in that case. I'm no Horn fan but I think it would've been great for him to play in Austin another season and finish his degree.

Thank you.  I put in a lot of study and analysis before arriving at my enlightened conclusion.  Are there going to be any Yates players in the draft?

How many former Yates players are in the NBA?  I know there was a thread before that listed Golden Triangle players that have made it to the league, just curious!

Good question...currently there are none...there are only two NBA players currently from Houston ISD...Daniel Gibson (Jones) and Emeka Okafor (Bellaire).

Isn't Rashard Lewis from Houston? I can't remember where he is from.

Rashard Lewis is from Alief Elsik

And another one that is from somewhere close to Houston, DJ Augustin?

DJ Augustin is a Louisiana native who transferred to Fort Bend Hightower after Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.

would've liked to have seen him stay another year.  don't know if he's nba material, but he's done well in college.  wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing professionally overseas or something.

J'Covan has a very high skill level, and is deceptively quick, but not very athletic...One more year could show that he can 1) guard an athletic NBA PG, 2) effectively play PG in the NBA, and 3) be a consistent outside threat.....He can score with the best of them, but these are the things that I think may be in question with NBA clubs right now...I really wish him well, because he has come a long, long way...

Quite Frankly:
I think that J'Covan should have stayed another year.  My questions are: is his foot speed to slow to guard other players in the League and will he be able to run a team as their point guard.  I hope that he goes to an NBA team that will give him time to make mistakes on the court and to grow as a man as well as a player.  Quite frankly, I am very proud of this student athlete.  When he left Port Arthur, no one gave him a chance because of his attitude and many wondered would he go to class.  Apparently, many people did not know this young man.  One thing that I knew about this ball player is that he loved the game.  He went to the beloved University of Texas, and not only excelled on the basketball court but excelled in the classroom.  He was a 1st team Academic All Big twelve selection 2 years in a row.

I believe is super quick with his feet and his decision making.  He has all the skills. He will look better passing to better players, it seemed as if his vision was a little to advanced for most he played with.  I think he can be a point guard in the league but he needs to improve his on-ball defense, he is goo in the passing lanes.  It would be better to leave next year, which will be considered a weak draft.  Only the right situation will do for this kid, still missing the "IT" factor.  Too bad his body growth did not cooperate with his skill level.

I liked everything you said about him, especially the vision part of how JB plays the game.. I think he will shine at the combine against better players. Always seems to elevate his play to the competition.. He needs to work on defense to be an every day player, but will get plenty of looks from teams because he can manufacture points as well as any one in this draft
