Guest bulldogbark
run down of all our key players from Jasper Newsboy: Jasper High School varsity baseball coach Shawn Mixon predicts good competition from both Kirbyville and Silsbee, but is upbeat about the Bulldogs' chances of another district championship. “Both Kirbyville and Silsbee are well-coached and they have some good players,†he said. “Buna has also come a long way. But oh yeah, we expect to win.†The Bulldogs advanced to the area round last year before bowing out to the Orangefield Bobcats. Jasper lost two seniors last year so this is a team with a great deal of experience. In addition, Mixon said that they benefit from the excellent skills of assistant coaches Chuck Atchison and Paul Trevino. “We're more mature this year than last,†he said. “We have more experience plus we're fortunate to have such good assistant coaches.†Here is a look at each player plus Coach Mixon's comments. Sophomore Malcolm Bronson is a first-year varsity player who wears jersey number 1; bats left, throws right; plays second base and outfield. “Malcolm will give us speed on the bases and somebody who can bunt and handle the bat well.†Junior Ryan Ellis is a third year veteran, who wears jersey number 2; bats right, throws right; plays second base. “Ryan is an all-district infielder from last year. He is a pitcher and utility player who bats right and thro w s right. “Chantz has the ability to pitch and play every position on the infield. He has i m p roved as a hitter this year. Senior Brandon Kines wears jersey number 8 and is a second year veteran. He pitches and plays outfield; bats right, throws right. “Brandon was all-district outfielder a year ago. He will move from left-field to c e n t e r-field. He should drive in a lot of runs in the middle of our line-up.†Junior Blake WellerAlexander begins his second year and wears jersey number 10. He bats right, thro w s right and will play outfield. “Blake is one of the most improved players on the team. He moves to outfield this year and has a chance to be a starter in right-field.†Junior Jaylon Clotiaux is a second year varsity player who wears jersey number 11. He bats right, thro w s right and will play outfield. “Jaylon brings speed and a quick bat to the line-up. He i m p roved toward the end of last season both as an outfielder and hitter.†Junior Robert Shellhammer is a third year veteran who wears jersey number 15 and is the team's catcher. He bats left and t h rows right. “Robert is rocksolid behind the plate and still has room to improve. He has improved as a hitter. He should keep opponents fro m stealing bases against us.†Senior Will Alvis is a fourth year varsity veteran who wears jersey number 17. He will pitch and play third base. He bats and t h rows right handed. “ Will was Most Valuable Player in the district last season. He has the potential to be dominant on the mound and at the plate.†Junior Travis Reagan is a t h i rd year player who wears jersey number 19. He is also a pitcher and third baseman. He will also pitch. “Robert had a great season at the plate his junior year.
