By Sam Khan Jr.Despite a strong performance from righthander Austin Pruitt, the Houston Cougars couldn't avoid a series sweep at the hands of No. 17 Central Florida, falling 3-1 to the Knights in 10 innings on Sunday at Cougar Field. It marked the first time since May 6-8, 2011, against Rice that the Cougars (10-16, 1-5 Conference USA) were swept at home.Pruitt had career highs in innings (81⁄3) and pitches (125), allowing one run on six hits to the hot-swinging Knights (23-6, 5-1) while striking out six. The teams entered the 10th inning tied 1-1. UCF first baseman D.J. Hicks broke up the tie with an RBI single off a 3-1 pitch from Matt Hernandez for a 2-1 lead. It was Hicks' nation-leading 42nd RBI of the year, and the Knights added another run off a Chris Taladay single for the final margin of victory.Houston stranded 11 runners on the day and 37 for the three-game series. They have lost six of their last seven games, with four of the defeats coming against Top 25 teams."(Pruitt) pitched a great game," coach Todd Whitting said. "We continue to leave an entire army of runners on base. It seems right now if it's not one thing, it's another. If we pitch, we don't hit; if we hit, we don't pitch. And our defense is pretty consistently bad. Until we can string two of the three together at one time, this is going to continue to happen."
