With all of the high winds we have had lately, where are some good spots to fish that are easy to get in and out of without getting blown off the water...I'm a new boat owner and need a little help here.  I want to FISH!

only if you go all the way back in.  not exactly sure how far you can go in, but if you aren't between the two points, you should be good.  correct me if i'm wrong here, westend.

Anything past the extended lines of the ship channel is past the points of land. If the coves is legal for a Texas license then the whole thing should be legal until you cross into a canal or bayou that outfalls into the cove.

remember where we fished it last year?  that's not past the two points, but it's a good way in there.

i think "cove" is misleading, because it gets shallow a long way before it actually gets into the actual cove.

This is the lighthouse cove. I believe that anything past the extended lines of the bank are no longer the common boundary waters and subject to a citation from Louisiana if the person does not possess a LA fishing license. Out in the channel itself should be fine but cross that imaginary line that I drew in and you need a LA license.

In my opinion........

yeah, but can see the area before you get to your line that extends is obviously shallow and full of oyster shell and whatnot.  hard to tell from that aerial photo, but that shallow area is HUGE... there were probably 10 boats fishing it the last time i went (in texas waters), and we were not casting on top of each other.

from the picture you'd assume the boat traffic would be in the middle of that channel, but it's actually closer to the far bank near the rigs, as that's where it's deepest, meaning there's a lot of shallow water to fish.

Yes. There is a lot of area that is in the shallows outside of the cove (like you said earlier) but once you cross into it, you need a LA license. That is where we fished was in the channel together (like you said earlier).

So to answer vhs's question, that is a very good place to fish and you don't need a LA license as long as you aren't up in the cove. The shallows/shell reef extends a good way out into the channel though and into the common boundary that does not require a LA license.

Good information guys....thanks a ton!

You snuck your post in 16 seconds before I answered bullets.  8)

It's pretty shallow and rough.  You are ok if you just pull up to the shallows and troll from there.  Honestly, I don't go up in the cove much.  i like to fish the drop off as the sun starts to get a little higher.

Are V-hull bayboats safe in the cove...with all the shallow water I was wondering how hazardous this area was for boats
[/quote]

Like westend said, you'd better troll the shallows. According to the tide, some of it might be 6" deep of oyster shell. Don't run into it with your big motor unless you are very sure where you are going. The shallows go well out into the channel that does not require a LA license.

when we go, we get up in the crap a bit, and we catch an awful lot of fish there, but you want to go with someone who knows what they're doing before you start running around in all the oyster beds.

speaking of lighthouse cove, the last time we went this idiot was trying to outrun a wave when a big ship went through, fired up his big motor, forgot to lift his trolling motor, and went full speed into an oyster reef.
