hj27 Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 who all from our area is capable of playing at the next level
Guest hfdad Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 IF you fall in these categories, you have a chance. 1st Tier -Usually will get drafted in first three rounds and be offered millions by Major League Organizations -Entire nation will have a handful -Player is a 5 tool player (hit for power, average, speed, arm, defensively excellent) -Player needs to be of good size -Pitchers throw 94-100 mph -If velocity is 92-94, off speed and mound presence needs to be advanced -Pitcher needs to be of good size 2nd Tier -Will fall into "perfect college material" and will be drafted lower (rounds 4-8 -These players rate out as being above average in a draft report -Have good tools, but nothing outstanding -Pitchers throw in the 88-92 range, good off speed pitches, and good mound presence -Players will go to major division I college programs and get heavily recruited -Partial to full scholarships offered to these players -Official trips offered to these players and they are wined and dined 3rd Tier -Will fill out the end of the Major League Free Agent Draft (rounds 10-30) -This tier is used by major division I college programs as "roster fillers" -Promising and could turn into a solid college player -Heavily recruited by lower level division I programs and division II -Small partial to half scholarships offered to these players -No official trips offered, mainly unofficial -Players are rated out as "average" in most categories -Pitchers throw in mid 80's to upper 80's -All other players will have to promote themselves and usually end up at junior college or stop playing
MIF04 Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Simply put, those criteria are 'fiction'. Based on this, there is no one in this area that is a Tier 1 and maybe not a Tier 2. For example, none of the pitchers in the area sit at 92-94; yet, we have 3 who have signed with big D1 programs: Harwood (Rice) tops around 90-91 but his breaking pitch is, at best, average. Angelle (A & M) tops in the upper 80s although he is more comfortable around 85-87 although is curve ball is probably a plus pitch. Ehlert is another guy around 90 with an above-average to plus breaking pitch. He signed with A & M. None of these meet the Criteria 2 but they are outstanding pitchers who will do well in a major college program. I don't think you can find a legitimate recruiter or MLB scout that would use that criteria. It was a good effort but it just doesn't work in real world recruiting, etc.
Guest hfdad Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Mif04 I've seen the Angelle kid throw and he being left handed is definite Tier 2 and would not be surprised if he isn't a high draft choice. Harwood and Elhert according your numbers are definite Div 1 pitchers which falls into Tier 2.
