AggiesAreWe Posted July 9, 2012 Report Posted July 9, 2012 Yet another local head boys basketball job comes open. Spurger ISD will look to fill this position in the next couple of weeks.Stay tuned
Howard Posted July 10, 2012 Report Posted July 10, 2012 Wow! This is a great job for any area coach. This school has a tradition of basketball excellence and great community support.
bigbasketballfan Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 Makes me wonder if this had anything to do with the new AD. The district has had numerous changes in the athletic department this year. Maybe there will be some stability and the program can be respectable.
AggiesAreWe Posted July 12, 2012 Author Report Posted July 12, 2012 Spurger is interviewing 4 applicants today that I know of.
bigbasketballfan Posted July 12, 2012 Report Posted July 12, 2012 Thanks for update AggiesAreWe. One of the problems that face small districts is that it is hard to keep a successful coach for more than a few years. An exception to this would be Big Sandy. These 1A schools struggle for many things and athletic success is one of them. Getting a good coach and a good teacher in the same package is hard to find and these small schools just can not afford to have a great coach but a sub-par teacher.

bigbasketballfan Posted July 13, 2012 Report Posted July 13, 2012 I think that they will be competitive but not reach the success they experienced the last 3-4 years for several reasons. The big one is that the little dribblers programs ended a few years ago and thus there is not a programs to teach the kids when they are small basics. An additional reason is the of this string, to hire and keep a good coach for any length of time in a 1A school is very hard. There is not a consistant influence and too many things are in play/flux. Up until the last taste of success over these last few years, there really wasn't a desire to be much or obtain much. If it happened, it just happened. A few people got involved in the little dribbler program, pooled together those boys and we all saw what happened. The last thing lacking is leadership in the district to be more than just average. That might tick some off, but from my view, soem just do not want to change. Thats my 3.5 cents worth.

I think you are on the money.Let's hope this new coach, whoever it will be, can build something for years to come.
AggiesAreWe Posted July 17, 2012 Author Report Posted July 17, 2012 Word is that current boys head basketball coach at West Hardin, Kully Hoffpauir, is the front runner for the Spurger job. The Spurger ISD board will meet Thursday to make a decision.
oiler#3 Posted July 17, 2012 Report Posted July 17, 2012 Why would Hoffpauir want to leave WHY anyways?

stevenash Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 Have heard he works for Exxon or somebody similar
bigbasketballfan Posted July 19, 2012 Report Posted July 19, 2012 It may not matter at this point, but where did Spurger's ex-coach Odom go? Is he still on campus as a teacher only or did he move on to greener coaching pastures elsewhere?

Foolsball is # 1
bigbasketballfan Posted July 20, 2012 Report Posted July 20, 2012 Not to drag this string out any more than it probably deserves, but what happened to Staphert at Kirbyville? Staphert sure has bounced around from Spurger, to Kirbyville, to Brookeland, back to Kirbyville and now to where if he left. I am assuming he left if Odom went there as head coach.
