Although some key parts to that team...Sherman Gilbert, Colton Monroe, Kedrick Harrison and Chance Andries are gone....several key components (15 starters) return in 2012 with the goal of bringing the Class 3A, Division II trophy to Coldspring. Returning to lead the Trojan offense is senior quarterback Alfred Scott (2nd team all district in 2011, 50-124, 1000 yd, 11 TD passing; 68 carries, 333 yd, 4 TD rushing), who is 28-3 as the Trojan starter. Joining Scott in the backfield will be new starters senior Trey Cooper(59 carries, 437, 4 TD in 2011), senior wing back Jamel Bass (4 carries, 9 yd), junior Patrick Giddens (17 carries, 188 yd, 2 TD) and junior Douglas Johnson (31 carries, 285 yd, 4 TD). Senior split end Bryce Shepherd (12 catches, 278 yd, 2 TD) and senior tight end Casey Lilley (11 catches, 268 yd, 3 TD) will comprise the main body of the Coldspring receiver corp. The Trojan offensive line returns almost entirely intact as senior guards Joe Stover (1st team all district) and Nolan Walker (1st team all district) and senior tackles Dalton Conrad (2nd team all district) and Jacob Mizell will be joined by junior Brady Barbay. Also look for senior guard Anderson Adams to see playing time on the line. 2012 DefenseDefense: 3-4Returning starters: 7While all staters Harrison and Andries have graduated, Coldspring does return all state talent in the form of all state honorable mention junior linebacker Patrick Giddens (22-3A Newcomer of the Year). Joining Giddens at linebacker will be Trey Cooper (1st team all district) and sophomore Alec Dunham. They'll be operating behind an defensive line which will include senior nose guard Greg Dunham (1st team all district), senior end Jonathan Swint (2nd team all district), junior tackle Von Cross and junior end J.J. Swinford. Johnson and fellow 1st team all district pick Jerrell Sykes will lead a Trojan secondary that will also include senior strong safety J.T. Wilson and free safety Shepherd.2012 Special TeamsGreg Dunham will perform the place kicking for Coldspring. Junior Kaleb Morrison will handle the punting. Johnson, who saw selected as the 22-3A Special Teams Player of the Year, will be the primary kick returner.2012 Key GamesColdspring will start off its 2012 season by traveling to Sheldon to take on C.E. King on August 31st. Shepherd will visit to start the Trojans' 22-3A district season on September 28th. A big district game will take place on October 19th as the Trojans travel to Huffman. It is suprising the teams that were unwilling to play a predistrict game against them because they didn't want a whooping. Several 3A and at least one 4A team nearby were too chicken to book two years of games for fear of the butt kicking they would receive.Of course, I remember when this 4A team rode a charter bus over to madisonville (3A) for a butt whipping a few years back. I guess the coach figured out he could get more raises for a winning season if he picked weaker teams in the predistrict schedule.
HubTx Posted August 4, 2012 Report Posted August 4, 2012 Back to back weeks on the road against Navasota and La Marque? Kudos to Coach Barbay for having the testicular fortitude to do that!!!

If we wanted to play, have to go to them.
