I know they weren't last year but I figured after the kind of season they had last year and what they have returning would have warranted a top 50 ranking to start this season.

When you've made the playoffs about 5 times in 85 years, only made it past the first round twice and won their first playoff game since John F. Kennedy was the president then it is hard for some people to think otherwise.

There are many storied programs around SE Texas but Vidor's usual story is a perennial loser or another hard luck year.

Maybe last year was not a fluke and maybe they will go deep yet again. When looking historically, it is hard to overcome the past as far as the Pirates go until the can show some consistency. A playoff win once every 50 years doesn't exactly engender confidence.

But in my defense they shouldn't base ranking off of the history of a team. They should base rankings off of who you have coming back from last year and how good you were last year. And base on how many starters we have coming back and how good we did last year some would say we deserve a ranking but i really don't care lol.

Surprising to see them ranked in the Top 25 at all. I could see in the 30s MAYBE.

Montgomery ranking based on the last few years of consistency. This year we are young playing do or die schedule. Angleton Wk1 Pearland Dawson Wk2- by district you'll know what this team is made of. IMO we are going to have a tuff year, but lots of talent coming.

Totally agree. This incoming freshman class is stacked with talent. The future is very bright, but this is gonna be a rough year outside of the weak district(not including Brenham). The hype this year is riding off the coattails of the past 4 years.

I am not going to disagree with your opinion but history does have a way of rearing its ugly head at times. Look at the also bad history of Lumberton. At 40+ years and no playoffs in school history and then they take the district by storm and then pull some upsets in the playoffs. Their history is erased and they are off and running into the future.......

..... well, that is what many people thought.

History isn't everything but sometimes it is easy to understand why a pollster will look at a team as a bit more suspect than a team that is always claimed to reload instead of rebuild.

..... in my opinion.

TVC....... I guess by your scientific theory that means that Nederland Basketball will not be ranked next year? Seeing how they have been terrible for years in basketball and have only recently had success under Coach English, I guess they will be in the same boat as Vidor football! I know you will get on here and say that its not the same thing...blah..blah...blah! The truth about it is guys like you get on here and bash other schools, namely Vidor because it makes you somehow feel better about yourself. You cant stand Vidor getting a little credit, so what do you do?... you bash them. Everybody in the area knows that Vidor has not had the best football tradition, just like Nederland does not have the best basketball tradition, but I bet you anything Coach Mathews and Coach English have heard plenty from guys like you, im just glad they are smart enough to not listen. ;) ;) ;)

You are right about it not being the same thing. Nederland is not on a one year run in basketball. If Vidor wins for two or three years in football then they will get a lot more notice than one first round win since 1964.

Secondly, it is not my theory, it is reality. It is not my poll so I have no say so. Look at some of the comments in this thread about some schools getting just the opposite attention as Vidor.... ranked high not because of returning starters or last year's record but historically. Nederland gets a good look every year because they have been in the playoffs for something like 15 of the last 16 years. Vidor has been in one time. Who do you think most people will pick no matter the other factors? A team that has been almost every year for a generation or a team that has won once in almost 50 years?

That is just human nature and humans are doing the polls. And that folks, is reality.

Oh yeah and again, this is not my poll so I am not sure what you are talking about with "guys like you". Look at the Dave Campbell's poll or any others. Which ones list Vidor in the top 25?

I am however one of the football pollsters in this forum. I might have Vidor at the top of the pack for all you know. Then what will you say about "guys like you"?  ;)
