However, under the guidance of longtime defensive coordinator, W.T. Johnston, the Eagles upheld tradition with another trip to the 2A, Division I playoffs. Key among those starters will be senior quarterback D.J. Dean (10-2A-I Offensive MVP, 1,280 yd passing, 672 yards rushing, 23 total TD in 2011) and his backfield mates junior running backs Kevin Shorter (1st team all district, 1,250 yd rushing, 20 total TD) and Brandon Johnson (1,150 yd, 16 TD). Junior LaQuinton Bryant will be the primary target for Dean with senior tight ends Corey Jenkins and Keyaun Seastrunk (both 2nd team all district picks) handling both catching and blocking duties. Senior Robert Kenebrew will lead an offensive line which will have newcomers Brent Simmons (sophomore), Treavone Davis (sophomore), Lincoln Herrington (soophomore), William Simmons and Paul Szemborski (junior).[size=14pt][b][u]2012 Defense[/u][/b][/size][size=12pt][b]Defense: 7 DiamondReturning starters: 6[/b]Six starters return from the 2011 Newton Eagle defensive squad that surrendered just 12 points a game. Senior defensive end Romondo Stewart returns to key a defensive line which will also include returning starting juniors Anthony Hadnot and Justin Williams along with a newcomer in sophomore Dave Lewis. Jenkins (1st team all district) returns to lead a linebacker corp that will also feature junior Carlton Meyers and sophomore Aaron McCain. Dean will lead the Eagle secondary which also features a couple of new starters, sophomores Roney Elam and Calum Foster.[size=14pt][b][u]2012 Special Teams[/u][/b][/size]Dean and Shorter will be the primary kick and punt returners in 2012.[size=14pt][b][u]2012 Key Games[/u][/b][/size]Newton will open the 2012 season by hosting Bridge City on August 31st. The Eagles will begin District 10-2A-I district play against Warren on September 28th, followed by big games with Kirbyville (October 5th) and East Chambers (October 12th).
