KFDM COOP
Not as easy at Southlake makes it look: De La Salle loses in California championship Canyon upsets No. 1 De La Salle 27-13 Updated 12/17/2006 CARSON, Calif. (AP) — Ben Longshore ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third to lead Canyon of Canyon Country to a 27-13 upset of De La Salle of Concord Saturday night in the California Interscholastic Federation's Division I championship game. Longshore completed 12 of 24 passes with three interceptions for 164 yards. J.J. DiLuigi added 138 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries as the Cowboys (12-2) gave the Spartans (13-1) their first loss of the year. DiLuigi, a senior who will attend Brigham Young, finished the season with 2,159 yards and 34 touchdowns. De La Salle's leading rushers, Tim Maupin and Tillman Pugh, were stifled. Maupin, who amassed 1,309 yards going into the game, finished with 66 yards in 11 carries. Pugh had 46 yards on 12 carries after rushing for 1,000 yards this year. Canyon built a 20-7 halftime lead on Longshore's 1-yard scoring run, his 30-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Suber and DiLuigi's 1-yard run. After De La Salle narrowed the deficit to 20-13 on Maupin's 59-yard scoring option pass to John Hendershott, the Spartans had chances to exploit two turnovers. But six plays after Hendershott's interception with 3:58 left in the third quarter, Canyon's Mike Loucks tackled Ryan Nastor for a 5-yard loss on fourth-and-inches at the Cowboys' 5-yard line.
