WO-S/Nederland Scrimmage Thread/Post comments here!

Both defenses played well. Ned gave up 2 big gains on passes. They looked to be seam routes or deep slants and well executed. Lotsa speed and pretty good execution by WO-S. Ned played tough run defense as did WO-S but Ned somewhat better. Ned has a couple or three running backs that are very solid. The passing game for Ned wasn't clicking but will get lots better with reps. Raines threw some good balls that were dropped and one resulted in a defensive td for WO-S. Raines also seemed a little tentative on some throws and was aiming the ball. That will improve with reps. The o-line for ned was being shuffled and should be good with the right mix. I'm personally not fond of the lateral passing game. Ned receivers are sometimes split more than 20 yds from the center. I don't presume to coach that team but if those splits were 5 yards tighter the ball would reach the receiver lots faster. As a comparison that is the same distance difference  as a little league pitching mound and a high school mound in baseball. You need a huge arm to make that wide throw with velocity. I just prefer a vertical passing game. I know the objective is to get the ball in space but realistically I think Ned had positive yards on one or two of those wide patterns out of quite a few tries. WO-S is a little farther along with their offense at this time. Another thing to bear in mind is that defense always is ahead of offense early in the season. It just comes more natural to read and react versus offensive execution that depends on timing. Just my personal observations. I believe these will develop into two very good teams and make some noise. Seen better football early in the year but have normally seen lots worse. Good luck to both.

It will be very difficult for many teams to score on WO-S this year. Just too good on the defensive side of the ball.

I predict that WO-S will have a minimum of 6 shut outs this season and quite honestly believe that Silsbee may be the only district team that will possibly get a score against this version of the Chain Gang Defense.

I said that earlier this year on this board and people jumped my butt saying im getting ahead of myself and I didnt know what I was talking about.. im telling you guys this group on defense as a whole is the best to come through WO-S in the past 12 years.. WO-S should and IMO will shut-out all but maybe 2 of their opponets.. Really and truly Nederland was suppose to get shut-out but the back up QB Rutledge threw a fluke pick six off of a deflected pass other then that WO-S would have won by 2td's like I said they would..
Well, if you want to take away Nederland's "fluke" pick six, then you have to take away WO-S's pick six that came off the hands of a Nederland receiver. Then WO-S scores just 1 TD to Nederland's 0 TD's.

I see where your coming from and your right, but just for the sake of a debate, The pick six WO-S had was against Nederlands 1's the one Nederland scored on was against WO-S's 2's at the end of the game.. But still you are right..

IMO If the offensive line does not shape up soon,Nederland better put some of the beef from the defensive line on the offensive line "at times".Would be nice to see some good ole smash mouth football instead of the version we are seeing now.If NED could get a couple of scores from the big guys,I think the D would be good enough to hold most teams under 14.

Ned put the ball on the ground several times. Wasn't fumbled snaps I don't think. Looked like bad exchanges from qb to rb and fumbles in traffic. Coulda been the contact.
ok, that'll be corrected, just the first scrimmage.... 8)

Barrow is not going to show everything in a scrimmage .....He will spread the field when the time is right..JMO..I have all the faith in the world in Monte 8) ...Nederland will be fine...And WOS will always out athelete you if you give them a chance...Carson had some bad breaks with droped balls but it will come together for the QB and backs , receivers..D-Fence will be there if the O is clicking or not..

Is the back-up QB as good as Raines for NED?
Raines is our QB this year, barring injury.
Raines does a fine job and Ned is lucky to have him.

Yes, we do have excellent backups at QB in Nederland (lessons learned)
White (jr - Varsity) next in line,
Smith (soph- JV) after him.
both underclassman are outstanding pitchers as well, they can hurl a football, too.

Everything looks fine for Ned at QB.
These kids are team players and loyal to the Black & Gold.

Pretty quiet when PNG plays WOS LOL!!!

Seay is playing Safety and REceiver on Varsity.
He's outstanding athlete and could step in if needed.
Of course,
It's better scoring td's than throwing for them!

Go Dogs!

Dogs will rebound next week for scrimmage against Dayton.

Always see the best when you play WOS~ No worries for Dogs.

I do agree about putting a little beef on the Oline (from the defensive side of the ball).  I would love to see Malveaux & Pryor getting some series on blocking for our offense, just to see what holes could open up.

Coach pops I think hit it on the head, throwing side to side against wos ain't happening. I know it is only a scrimmage but the defenses looked well above average for sure.  I could see wos putting up a couple of shutouts for sure. Neds defense will test everyone they lineup against . Running against ned will be very difficult.  I can see scoring against them will have to be thru the air or on special teams. Their fumbles were not due to exchanges, they were exactly that fumbles most of which I think they got back. The int ned threw the receiver should have held on to, but didn't. Wos qb was the backup when they threw their pick6. With it being early and the first real practice not game, I think the timing will get there for ned, and I know both offenses didn't dig deep into the playbook , we shall just have to wait and see. Ready for next week to see what dayton looks like, already know both teams have strong footed kickers !

not unless something happens to force the issue, but that beast would rather play defense and hit people than play QB. After Carson is gone you could have 3 or 4 battling in the off season for the starting spot and all are very capable. I thought Carson threw the ball well and I think he will have a good year. Our offensive line is always a work in progress the first few weeks, but it always comes together.

I saw #89 playing on both sides for most of the night. That kid is a STUD. Blocks well on offense and is dang near unstoppable on defense. Wish we had him.

The best way to beat an aggressive and quick defense like WOS is to use screens, traps, and play action. Nederland has been successful against WOS in previous years running these plays. I wasn't present last night, so i dont know if Monte ran those type of plays. I would guess that Ned didn't run many screens or bootlegs. Even if they did, the timing on such plays is crucial, and usually doesn't start clicking in the 1st glorified practice. The Dawgs will be fine, and there is no need for bridge jumping!  ;D
On the other hand, sounds like WOS will be making another deep run into the playoffs. Good luck to the Mustangs.

The best player will play QB in the next few years for Nederland and always has under Neumann.

Raines will finish out tenure this year. Job well done.

Next year, the nod goes to then Sr. White.  He's got a nice arm.  He's tall and athletic.

After that, Smith, accurate passer, good hands with the ball, tall and strong as well.

Both White and Smith strong arms on the mound in baseball as well, don't see them getting "looked over" on the gridiron.

I didn't see much in the interloper who transferred in, not quick at all, running the ball, not a strong passer, really doesn't perform to Ned's QB standard, kinda shaking my head???? (Guess we just have a crop of QBs if needed.)

That's what I hear as well,
QB will continue to be strong for Ned the next several years.
These kids are all team players and will do whatever it takes to become better and win for the Dogs.

Great season for the Dogs with Raines with the rock!

Still think we need some beef on the O line.  I think this will help the running game which we help the passing game.  JMO.

Mr Ump. you always have the best seat in any sport. Big Ed did a good job as OC, heard Cornel all night on Ned side.
Big Ed has some really good coaches on the offensive side and he will do just fine. I think sometimes the fans expect to see their team in mid season form in the first scrimmage. One thing that was a big difference from last year was the kids knew where to lineup and penalties were at a minimum. It was very basic and everybody just needs to get the feel of the game in their blood. Nederland had a very good defensive line from what I saw. Them boys been eating a bunch of rice and gravy  :D

    • I don’t benefit from it, that’s not my area.  But the average cost to imprison someone is around $15k per year (on average in the US) and capital cases cost somewhere between $1.5-$3M with over half being overturned or reduced to life in prison anyway.  These numbers may be inflated since the last report I read but I’m sure it would be on both sides and higher on the DP side if anything. So what’s the point?  We feel better because we got to return the favor on someone (hopefully) who committed a heinous crime?  And I don’t know I can say we have “complicated” it. Which appeal should we cut out?  Our justice system has a pecking order and we have higher courts for a reason. When we are about to impose the ultimate judgment, should we cut steps that other cases have to save a buck?  Or do we not pay for an indigent person’s experts at the trial court level because it’s too expensive? Or do we just lock them up and throw away the key (unless we later find out they weren’t actually guilty, in which case we have a key and a life we haven’t unjustly ended) and save a ton of money?  Seems to me to be an easy and obvious solution but I’m more of a pragmatist.
