Not considering myself an "old timer", but who all on here rememembers some of the old WOS-PNG battles?  For some reason 2 game come to my mind right away.  (1) Final game of the 79 season, the Indians come visiting at then Mustang Stadium, winner will take the 22-5a district title.  had a standing room only crowd there. Game was a nail biter. Think WOS won something like 26 to 21.  PNG had the ball for the final drive and drove it down to about the WOS 20. Last 2 plays of the game were passes into the end zone which had one of them connected would have won the game for PNG. Both passes were defended and WOS walked away with there 1st ever district crown. (2) Believe it was 86 or 87 again in Mustang Stadium, another nail biter, this one low scoring.  WOS finally pulled a little bit away in the 4th qtr and won something like 14-3.

I'm sure there are plenty others, just these 2 are what stays in my memory.  Post up any that stick out on yours.

remember that game well, I was there..the crowd was unbelievable. Topped in my memory only by the TJ (Dodge and Duhon) game at Mustang Stadium.

'98 PNG at WOS - Down 21-14 - Long runs down to the 3 yard line with no timeouts and about 6 seconds left. Tries to get to the line to spike it and time runs out just before.

Great game.

'00 WOS at PNG...PNG kicks away from Franks on the 2nd half kickoff. Balls goes out of bounds. Move us back 5 yards and for some reason we decide to kick deep to Franks??  :o

TD Franks and WOS wins 7-0! They went on to the State title game against Ennis that year.

Yep...Long was injured on a late hit and WOS was flagged for it. Hooks comes out like he is checking on Long and starts to argue the call with the officials while Long is laying on the turf.  Lost some respect for one of the great coaches of our time in HS FB that night. I know he just got caught up in the game, but he'd been around long enough to know to temper down till after the player was tended to.

1979: WOS 28  PN-G 24...as described by marshman...great game...PN-G had 2 or 3 chances on the last drive to throw the ball in the end zone, but it was not meant to be for Ethridge's Indians.

1982 or 1983:  PN-G 17  WO-S 14...great defensive battle all night long...Denny Duhon's 4Q FG wins the game for PN-G.

1989:  WO-S 25  PN-G 20...Danny Malone's Indians pull out all the stops with a throwback screen on a kickoff return, a fake punt, and a swinging gate pass to the fullback for a TD...but WO-S won the game with a long bomb late in the 4Q...largest crowd I've ever seen at old Mustang Stadium...standing room only and fans walked away exhuasted...both teams played their collective rear-ends off.

1992:  PN-G 14  WO-S 13...Mustangs get a late 4Q score and go for two and the W...the runner lost the ball at the goal line during the 2-point try and PN-G recovered...Referees conferred and said it didn't matter because only the Mustang ball carrier could recover the ball in the endzone and he clearly did not recover it...an Indian defender and Mustang OL were tied up for the ball...Hooks went crazy, Indian fans booed him...and then finally PN-G snapped a long district win streak by the Mustangs.

1998:  WO-S 19  PN-G 12...Jr Dustin Long and the Indian air attack come up short vs. the Mustangs.

1999:  WO-S 21  PN-G 14...as described by others in this thread...Dustin Long ran out time.  Great game by both teams...slugfest...PN-G would not lose again until it faced Art Briles and Kendall Briles' Stephenville Yellowjackets in the state championship.

2000:  WO-S 7  PN-G 0...the Mustangs marched to the state championship game during 2000, and PN-G provided them with one of their strongest tests...another defensive battle...neither team gave up many yards.

2003:  WO-S 21  PN-G 20...another nail bitter and slug fest...PN-G used its powerful OL and ground game to wear down the Mustangs, but WO-S proved it had enough stamina and will power (and speed) to survive PN-G ground game.

Not a lot of controversy when PN-G and WO-S get together...just good football.  Glad PN-G was able to get WO-S back on the schedule.

Did the cutoff for 5A used to be much lower or has WOS lost that many students?  If so, why the exodus?
[/quote]

The latter.  Simply, no jobs.  Throughout Orange's growth and into the early '80s Orange has a couple of large ship building companies, Levingston and American Bridge which employed thousands.  By the end of 1985, I believe the two companies combined had a payroll of less than 200/  Combine this with the fact that plants along "Chemical Row" have been reducing staff, usually through attrition, Orange is not the best place to find a job.

That's the absolute truth!! I been looking for a job for nearly a year with no luck.  Finally decided to go to LIT full time for Instrumentation.

Thanks for bringing back some great memories of other great games!

Actually, the Franks kickoff fiasco was in the 2003 game which ended 21-20. It occurred just before halftime right after PNG tied the game up. Still scratch my head over that one.

The 7-0 game was a Jonathan Feathers pass to Jermaine Hope where the Indian defender hit him right about the time he caught the ball and Hope miraculously spun off of the tackle and ran in the endzone... It was a great game!

What about the game wos won 3-0, png took opening drive down to the one yard line and got stuffed four straight times only to have wos win on a 48 yard fieldgoal with 48 seconds left. Png then driveds down the field gets to about the 21 yardline or so as time runs out. I believe that is the game you are talking about and that was the year we lost to stephensville. We played ned the last game of the season, we were unranked and spanked ned at home 31- 8 and took their #9 ranking right off their scalps. That was a fun year to watch the ndns. Had burnett gone for the fieldgoal instead of the TD I'm sur it would have been ot and who knows what would have happened. And the game that franks took it to the house, that run was incredible, he ran to the wedge hurdled the line hit the sidelines and was gone, crazy that we kicked the ball to him lol, what a bad mistake to kick to him lol I let a few words fly with that call lol.
