texasaggie Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I did this last week on the Brenham-Foster thread, so I figured I'd make it's own thread this week.1. Montgomery- another strong outing against another top 5 team in the state. They are facing a totally different level of competition than the rest of the district but they are playing them tough with a strong run game and defense.2. Brenham- Cubs got back on the winning side after their shocking loss to Foster last week. They were barely up on this extremely inferior team at the half which should be concerning. They will need to shore up the mistakes heading into district play.3. Huntsville- after thrashing Humble last week, the Hornets were overmatched by 5a College Park. They have played better than expected and seem to be the front runner for the #3 slot.4. Magnolia West- Bell has built a program out of thin air but there seems to be a great lack of talent this year. They fell to former district for Stratford this week, but it should interesting if they can make a run at the the top three.5. Magnolia- This is most likely by default. Willis has taken back to back thrashings and Waller had a bye. The Bulldogs do technically have a win (even though it's Galena Park) and they played respectable against 5a Bryan. Now there is a HUGE drop off after the top 4, but Magnolia has been decent enough to jump to 5th.6. Willis- After being dominated by Navasota and Crosby, the Wildkats limp into district lacking the talent they had ridden for the past 3 years. I thought they could contend for a playoff spot, but they are not a plug and play program like the top of the district.7. Waller- Bulldogs had a bye, so they didn't get to prove anything after last week's loss, but they usually have some athletes. This year is a coaching transition so it could be a long year.8. Caney Creek- CC gets a win which is enough to jump Rudder into 8th. But it was against Porter so let's not get too excited. It's still Caney Creek.9. Bryan Rudder- Young school is still trying to get the ball rolling. They were handled easily by El Campo, and have failed to be competitive so far which puts them in the 9th slot.
Eazy Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Once again, great analysis and no argument from me. I will look forward to your weekly updates. Your top 4 will all be playing each other this weekend, and I expect that 1 & 2 will prevail over 3 & 4.
texasaggie Posted September 10, 2012 Author Report Posted September 10, 2012 Thanks Eazy, I suspect Montgomery-Huntsville will be closer than Brenham-West. I think Huntsville is a better than West and plus Montgomery will be a little banged up having faced back to back really good, physical teams. The Montgomery run game between Dedrick and Paul should be an interesting matchup against the Huntsville defense. Not sure how the MRI went on Bodhi's knee but either way I'd expect to see a lot more of his little brother Braden playing in his absence or limited play.
dawgs20 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Don't sleep on Magnolia they could win the district or finish in the top four.
Eazy Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Huntsville had trouble stopping the option attack from College Park and lost by 23. I see a similar result here. I think Montgomery wins this by 21. At least this time, it won't end the season for Huntsville as the last two matchups have.
texasaggie Posted September 10, 2012 Author Report Posted September 10, 2012 dawgs20, I'm glad you have faith in your team, but I felt like I was stretching it just putting them at 5th. They just aren't at the same level as the top 4. Mag West opening really hurt Magnolia's program. They dont have the best talent in their own town nor do they have the program in place to plug and play. They MIGHT contend with Willis and Waller to get to the outside edge of playoff contention, but to put them in the top and especially at the top of district is unrealistic.
dawgs20 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 I am just saying don't sleep on Magnolia, and you can also tell by your name being an aggie some are not to smart.
texasaggie Posted September 10, 2012 Author Report Posted September 10, 2012 *tooI am confused on whether or not that was an attempt to insult me because of your poor syntax, but just keep in mind that a close win over Galena Park is not going to cut it when Magnolia plays Montgomery and Brenham. Just pray the Bulldogs can keep it respectable instead of getting blown out like usual.
dawgs20 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 This is not your old Magnolia team. They played Bryan last week and they have probably the best qb that Magnolia will face the rest of the season and the best athlete they will see. Just keep in mind that when they play Montgomery tell your boys to be ready for a fight.
texasaggie Posted September 10, 2012 Author Report Posted September 10, 2012 After scrimmaging the #2 team in 3a and Playing tight games with the #3 and #1 teams in 4a, Da Bears will be MORE than ready to "fight" with Magnolia. You sure are cocky about a team that hasn't proved anything in the past or so far this season. Prepare to be brought back to Earth soon. Beating Galena Park last year didn't do you much good either. I wouldn't be talking if I were in your position.
dawgs20 Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Good luck to your team hope they do as well as you say they will do. This group on kids are better than people think, so time will tell if they can play with y'all are not will see.
Eazy Posted September 10, 2012 Report Posted September 10, 2012 Time will tell with Magnolia. Looks like they had some success running the ball against 5A Bryan, but they did give up 300 yards passing. I think they are better than initially expected, but I would also rank them middle of the District right now until they can prove they are a playoff team.
BrenhamFan Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Ah.... Finally some good 18-4A talk! I guess this is where I should say what I have to say.1. Montgomery- I'll agree with you for 2 reasons.... The Bears have played alot stiffer competition and while they lost a lot, Brenham lost even more. It's hard to put a 0-2 team at #1, but we're not really that deserving of the spot either. They should handle the Hornets rather easily, but you never know. 2. Brenham- We could be ranked at #1 still, but this young team has looked very unconvincing. They have all the reason in the world to have trouble this year with all that's going on, but we have slowly shown signs of improvement. Maybe now the pressure will be off without the ranking and getting that first win for JD. MW hasn't faired too well against the Cubs in the past, but this game should be closer than the past few. I'll still take the Brenham by 10. It's hard to watch your team be replaced by a team that has never beaten you, but sometimes the truth hurts. Good thing is, we will have the chance to get our spot back soon. ;)3. Magnolia West- They start district play the same way they have for the past few years, which is against Brenham. IMO, starting with the team that has won their district the past couple of years, is probably best. If they can manage to come into ice cream land and sneak out with a win it could do 2 things.... Set the tone for a good district run with lots of momentum, and send Brenham, a team that will contend with them for a playoff spot, spiraling even further down.4. Huntsville- The Hornets are coming off of a loss to start district play, and having Montgomery this week will likely send them into week 3 on a 2 game losing streak. The defense looked really good against Humble in week 0, but Montgomery is a different kind of beast. They need to get all of the wins they can now, cuz I'm not rocket scientist, but consider they are likely to be fighting for the last playoff spots, I doubt they wanna leave their fate hanging on the hinges till week 9, when they will have to make a trip to Cub Stadium. By then the young Cub team will have a lot more experience.5. Magnolia- By process of elimination I'll put Magnolia in at 5. This might be high, but there's not a lot to go off of just yet. They earn this pretty much cuz they have a win and didn't get blown out by Bryan. Playoffs, a big maybe, but I highly doubt they win this district, or even finish in the top 3 for that matter. That 4th spot is there's if they want it, but it will take more than 1 or 2 good games to earn that spot.6. Waller- I couldn't decide between Magnolia and Waller for the 5th spot, but I decided to put Waller behind Magnolia for now. We get these guy at the Taj Mahal of a stadium next week, so I'll know a lot more about them then.7. Willis- This has to be the biggest disappointment yet. In fact, after 2 games and still not scoring, I'm not sure the Wildkats are even aware that the season has started, and we are now in district play. A few people expected them to compete for a playoff spot, but I'm not so sure any more.8. Caney Creek- Thanks to Rudder joining the district, they have some hope to avoid last. Do they have a new coach? Yes. A playoff chance... Not at all.9. Rudder- I hope you guys are ready cuz Caney Creek is probably your only chance at a district win. BTW, for some reason, this is our HC game. (That's for you Soulja and Scooter)
Eazy Posted September 11, 2012 Report Posted September 11, 2012 Waller is still an unknown this year as they have just played one game. El Campo beat them 31-0. El Campo also beat Rudder 55-26 for comparison. The question is: How awful is Willis? Some preseason reviews had them at #3, but they appear to be more like #6 or #7 at best. They definitely have had some tough competition to start the year, getting blown out by 42 and 49 points. We'll see if they can rebound and handle Caney Creek this week. This now looks like a winable game for Caney Creek. I expect a close game.
