shooter Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 Mixed-Up Priorities (p. 12) in the latest Sports Illustrated reads: You chose the wrong Sign of the Apocalypse (Scoreboard) last week. At a time when schools across the contry are struggling, Carthage (Texas) High's new $750, 000 JumboTron seems far more outrageous than an Oklahoma City school district's rules barring non-Oklahoma sports teams' apparel. Richard Temkin, Farmington Hills, Mich. Are their priorities mixed up?

Eazy Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 As the state cuts school funding and districts lay off teachers, 70% of Carthage voters approve a special bond issue to pay for a 750K Jumbo-Tron. It’s all just a big status symbol to say “Hey, look at usâ€. And believe me, there will many other school districts that will rush to build a bigger one. I’m beginning to think that schools no longer exist for education, but for athletics.

j_dog Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 better for the other teams in the district for them to put their money into a scoreboard rather than something like additional coaches or an improved weight room! ;D

If they don't spend it, it will be sent to the state. The school put this up on a bond that was broken into 3 different proposals. This one, an indoor practice facility and about $10 mil in school repairs/upgrades. They all passed with this one being the lowest with an approval of about 68%. Just built a state of the art $17 mil elementary school. With the money brought in they are able to pay them off early. Don't have to like it, but the tax payers did approve it by a fairly large margin.
Englebert Posted September 13, 2012 Report Posted September 13, 2012 How much money can a school generate on advertising on the JumboTron? Can it be a significant amount to cover/defray the initial cost? I have no idea how much advertising like this can bring in. Just curious if the overall cost can be severly cut by advertising.

UHFALCON Posted September 14, 2012 Report Posted September 14, 2012 Carthage is ne of the Natural Gas capitals of the world- that is how they get their money. Having been a resident there- they see it as an apreciation to their athletic program and for winning numerous state football titles. Some schools actually still care about athletics
