KFDM COOP Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 Nowitzki and Lewis go down in Mavs-Sonics game SEATTLE -- It wasn't a good night for star forwards in Wednesday night's Mavericks-Sonics game. Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki was helped off the court with 2:05 left in the first quarter Wednesday night after spraining his left ankle against the Seattle SuperSonics in a game Dallas won 103-95. The Sonics, meanwhile, lost forward Rashard Lewis to an injured tendon early in the game. The team said he will be re-evaluated Thursday. Nowitzki was hurt following a missed free throw by teammate Jerry Stackhouse. Seattle's Chris Wilcox jumped for the rebound and was bumped by DeSagana Diop of the Mavericks. Wilcox fell to the ground, his legs spreading and his left foot hitting Nowitzki just above his left foot, causing the All-Star's ankle to roll. Nowitzki was down on the floor for a few minutes before being carried back to the locker room by two teammates. X-rays on Nowitzki's ankle were negative and the team said he would be re-evaluated when the Mavericks return to Dallas. The Mavericks host the Clippers on Friday night. Nowitzki had six points in the first quarter. Lewis was injured in the opening minute, when he attempted to block Erick Dampier's shot from behind. Television replays showed Lewis' hand getting caught in the net as he tried to swat the shot. Seattle called a timeout and Lewis was immediately taken to the locker room for X-rays. The team said Lewis injured a tendon in his hand, would not return and will get further evaluation on Thursday. Seattle has played the last nine games without Ray Allen, sidelined with a right ankle injury. Allen has been cleared to practice and coach Bob Hill said before Wednesday's game he hopes Allen will be able to play on Saturday at home against Toronto. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
