If every parent were normal and took it like Tragichippy did, I would almost agree...

For the older kids, 13-14, this is part of the game...ehhhh, no it's not.  Spreads are for betting, and if there is betting going on which uses the spreads posted here, it IS a violation of the rules...

That would be the least of it...

Again, if every parent were normal,

1.  They wouldn't take the sport seriously, and remember that it is a game;

2.  They wouldn't give their kids grief over it, but we know better, don't we?

3.  Coaches wouldn't get stpid like they did in Tustin, CA.  You want to know what lessons will be learned from that?  Just that you have to find a better way to keep it on the down low, and you have to vet the dads and moms a lot better to insure that there isn't a wuss in there somewhere to mess up the sanctity of football.

I've coached before...my job was to get those kids ready to play ball, and have a good time doing it.  (Of course, I was a flag coach).  It wasn't to win at all costs, it wasn't to make the other team look like fools.  Though even in the flag ranks there were those who would teach their kids to tackle a breakaway run instead of pulling their flags, I didn't teach that.  If I was a bad coach, so be it.  My job wasn't to wear tight polyester shorts and shirt, and my old letterman's jacket, while pointing to all the flag, pee wee, and other trophies MY PLAYERS had won.  If they earned them, awesome...but at the end of the year, it was the best feeling to have a kid want to come back the following year, because I gave a d*** as a coach.

Spreads?  Good for putting on bread, and bookies...

Lol I'm pretty sure the spreads that the people do on here has nothing to do with gambling lol. Pretty sure it is their opinion on how many points a team will win by lol

Good post Elhector, and I also agree with you to a certain point.  I also agree with Braby (and REALLY hope we are correct) in stating that there is no gambling going on with the spreads.....I think it's all for fun....

I've been very fortunate to have worked with coaches that do put the kids first and teach the game. I know there are bad seeds out there, I just hope it's minimal.

I agree with everything that has been posted on this thread!! I really feel that the spreads are really just for smack talking purposes for the adult fans. LOL Elhector I love your post, its all about the kids having fun and want to return. I have coached at various levels in various sports and having a kid call you coach at the mall, at high school football games, at the schools, and at practice is something you earn and you should be proud of it. If the kids try to avoid you than you have a problem. My own son gets upset because he cant get his time with his dady at other venues we attend because everyone wants to be around the coach!! He just ask questions and i ans them, such as why does everyone call you coach? my reply is "because they respect and appreciate what i do" There is nothing like being appreciated and respected in whatever you do. There are bad seeds in volunteer sports and thats where we as parents step in!! I can assure you if my son played for a bad seed i would know about it and it will not be tolorated!!! A bad seed to me is teaching/telling kids to play outside the rules of any sport. Rolling bats, late hits, and intentionally trying to hurt someone are just a few things thats outside the rules and my son will not be affiliated with such people/programs. One thing that I will bet on is that most of the bad seeds never played any sports past high school, because the ones who played at the next level knows the importants of sportmanship whether you like or dislike the opponent theres only one way to play the game and its the correct way. Ask BMT B what happens when they get a personal foul called on them in the game, such as blocking in the back and/or late hit!! Well i will tell you, the get ran real hard after practice for that bad decision and thats where respect is built!!! Not from giving that kid the game ball!!! Its all about what we teach as volunteer coaches!!! ENOUGH SAID!!!!

Though in Tustin it was the coaches who went stupid, I think that in some cases, parents will take the spreads and slam on their kids because the spread lists them as double digit underdogs.  It's these same parents who will get all over coaches as well.  The vetting process for coaches is pretty decent in most leagues, but there is no vetting process for parents.

I can see a post where there is an opinion about one team beating another, and smack talk going back and forth in fun...I really can see that.  However, it's usually the parent of one team smack talking with his buddy on an opposing team.  When you put it in a spread form, like Ocho does, it institutionalizes it, making it "official", even if the intent was for something else entirely.  I DO NOT think that Ocho and any other parent has any ill will toward anyone...I think they realize that it is opinion, and that even a +30 team can rise up and play hard and win.  Again, the problem is that there are idiots out there that don't take it as such...and use it to berate their kids, and go after coaches that don't rise to their level of "respectability".

The forum isn't part of the game, it's a website for people to socialize. The point of people ranking teams,  posting spreads, and discussing is for entertainment. Its only 1's opinion which they are entitled too. Why the haters not having this same discussion for people on here ranking their Jr High or High School teams? Probably because your part of it)  Just to remind you, They are children also, yet some of you approve of ranking them and you approve of them being written about in the newspapers and on websites? That is a strong double standard.

Haven't been part of football for a while.  While I din't disagree that it is INTENDED for entertainment, and that they are entitled to their opinion, let me ask you...why is that opinion being asked for, instead of posting your own opinion and then talking back and forth?  As for rankings, they don't really have a spread number, unless someone assigns one to it.  Rankings are about as useful as the college ones are...homers are going to rank their organizations teams higher.

Spreads are a whole different animal all together.  The point about spreads is that you will bet whether a team wins (or loses) by that much.  If a team gets to or exceeds the point spread, they have "covered the spread", and the bets are paid as such.  Understandable in Vegas...but what's the point here?  Team rankings (which I don't like either, to tell you the truth) don't take into account what a team will win by or lose by.  They just show which team might be stronger.  A spread is really an interesting way to say "this team sucks, and this is how bad".  That is why I can see some wild eyed daddy (or momma) jaw jacking, or even abusing their kid over it, or even attacking a coach over it.  Did the people doing the spreads make them?  Nope...they just provided the spark to light the powder keg.  Admittedly, that can happen anyway...

Will you continue doing the spreads?  Most likely.  Will a daddy or momma go stupid and harm someone?  Most likely not...though, I am sure the people in Tustin, CA were feeling the same way before everything blew up...It's never a problem till it happens...

Thank you, He has...

Among other things, He has given me the common sense to know the harm (or lack thereof) in the stupid point spreads which mean little to anyone...even the posters. (You see...it's all in fun...)

No one is perfect...but c'mon man...are you really going to post on the social harms of goofy point spreads which are inconsequential to anyone?  Nobody is betteng on the 9 yr old's football games dude...
